SAHRR Border 3

It’s Monday, and time for the release of SAHRR Border 3. I have to say, you all knocked it out of the park with your star borders! It was so much fun to see your borders – you are a creative bunch!

This week’s host is Chris of Chrisknitssews and she has chosen the hourglass block. Hourglass blocks are quick and simple, but I had a bit of trouble settling on fabrics for this round. I auditioned a few, pulled out more fabric, considered a run to the local quilt shop – but in the end, I had just enough of a red and blue fabric to make 16 hourglass blocks.

To be honest, I’m not really keen on this border. I maybe should’ve made the hourglass blocks a bit smaller, but I’ve been using a 3-1/2″ border and wanted to stick with that. I am happy with the lighter blue and red for the blocks, though.

I’m still adding the green borders between each round, and I like how it frames up the borders and lightens up the Ash Grunge a bit.

My quilt now measures 36-1/2″ square, and it has outgrown my little design wall.

Link Up with Chris

This week you will link up your hourglass borders with Chris at Chrisknitssews. Here’s the schedule once again (you can get to each link just by hovering over it and clicking).

Thanks for stopping by for a peek at my SAHRR Border 3. Make sure you stop by to see Chris and her introduction to this week’s block, as well as the other co-hosts for more ideas and inspiration!

Happy Stitching!

Fun layout of the hourglass blocks! I’m enjoying your weekly reveals especially because the robin has me thinking spring.

I love your border! All your SAHRR elements are so well placed – very eye pleasing. I really like the colors you are using. I hadn’t intended to limit my palette to yellow/blue, but that is how it worked out. I’m going to pull out the bins and see if I can work in another color . . . thanks for the inspiration!

Spring is really popping with the robin and all those green borders, now if only the real spring would join in!

I think the size blocks chosen work well enough, Wendy. Each border appears to be getting progressively larger blocks. Perhaps, next time you can begin again with small ones and work your way through again or alternate the medium and larger size from here on out. I really the placement you chose for this round!

I like the colors you are using. I would have a hard time doing one of these round robins though as I don’t know if I could always incorporate someone else’s ideas to the next border.

I like how this one turned out and I agree about those thin green borders. Wondering if adding the next green border might “bring it home” and you’ll be more keen on it then? ;o)

Love this layout, and I really love the green borders. They set everything off very nicely, IMO!! I decided to let mine just go with my squirrelly flow as far as size goes, even though I love the consistency of your 3 1/2″ borders!

It’s looking great. I’ve been watching a few others who are making these. They’re all turning out so cute.

In agreement with the other comments, I like this border. Putting the hourglass blocks together like this makes me think of wrapped hard candy. It is super. Also love the green dividing borders. It is coming along nicely!

  • KJ

This is so pretty. I am thinking of joining in, just for fun. Not likely I can catch up or keep up. February 1 was the reveal of a Halloween QAL block and I “need” another Halloween quilt. 🙂 Thanks for getting me inspired.

Knowing you, you will piece the next border in such a way as to integrate this one so that you will like it better. I like bringing the red out. You are doing great! 🙂

  • Eva

Guess I know what you mean, how difficult it is to integrate. But your hourglasses and the star gives each corner a very good „weight“ … full of balance and harmony. You should love it! And quilting lines will later be the cherry on the cake. Hope right wording. And the green borders are super. It is like stepp by stepp spring comes… with every border. Green is one colour of the year! Unfortunately I used the seam ripper and redone all my stars tonight so I am behind all others this week. If spring is coming to fast, we have no time to sew. Than outdoor activities are on the list an the garden work is calling… have a great week!

Hi Wendy! What wonderful and thoughtful comments you have. I, too, love the green border you’ve been adding in between each round. They seem to really make the sweet birdie in the center stand out all the more. The hourglass blocks do remind me of wrapped candy and they look fab in red and blue. Nice job! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

  • Sandra Walker

It crossed my mind to do two-colour hourglass blocks but in the end they are just one with the background. As Roseanne said, they remind me of candies. Salt water taffy I believe. I like your bright happy colours!

  • Kate

Your SAHRR is looking good! You were so wise to minimize the number of blocks you used in the border. It’s much easier to keep up that way.
