SAHRR Border 4
How can it be time for the SAHRR Border 4 already?! Does it seem to you like this quilt along is flying by, too? This week flew by for me, being away from home two days, and then just trying to catch up. I don’t have as much to show you on my quilt today, but I do have my blocks done. Here’s a peek at my quilt from last week:
Our host for this week is Anja, and she’s got all her ducks geese in a row and wants us to fly with her. You guessed it – this week’s border is Flying Geese!
I must confess, I do not enjoy making Flying Geese blocks, but I like them much more now with the four-at-a-time method. This fall, Quilting Jetgirl shared a very helpful tutorial for making them, too, which you’ll want if your FG blocks end up scant; she has a nifty trick for that.
This week I have my FG blocks done, but I’m waiting until next week to finish the border. I think the two will work well together, and I’ll be able to keep my quilt size a bit smaller. Here are my blocks. They are 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ in size, sewn together in pairs. My quilt is currently 38-1/2″ square.
And here is a little peek at my current border plan. It may be subject to change!
I’m not bothering to show you the full quilt, since there’s not much to see. Plus, there’s a bit of a mess around the base of the quilt, which you really don’t want to see! My quilt has now outgrown my small design wall, so it’s getting a bit tricky figuring out the layout. Anyway, I’m using just a few blocks in the border, unless I change my mind and make more this week (doubtful).
Here is the remaining schedule for SAHRR 2023, for your reference:
- February 13: 4th Round: Anja @ Anja Quilts
- February 20: 5th Round: Emily @ The Darling Dogwood
- February 27: 6th Round: Gail @ Quilting Gail
- March 13: Parade – showing all of your finished SAHRRs!
To link up this week, head over to Anja Quilts!
Looking forward to seeing all of your SAHRR Border 4 beauties!

Love the addition of the pink and the purple. This is such a happy quilt. I also don’t like stitching flying geese, but the effect is always worth it

Your flying geese look good, I like the colours.

It’s coming together nicely, glad you figured out the method of geese that works for you!

Love the colors of your geese!

Thanks for sharing the link back to my updating sizing for four-at-a-time geese. It’s made all the difference in how I feel about piecing them. I look forward to seeing how these get combined with next week’s prompt!

It’s turning out really cute. I’m with you…not a fan of making the flying geese blocks.

I love the colors in your SAHRR, Wendy! The flying geese you made look great, and I’ll enjoy seeing what you decide to do with them. This year, I’ve liked just making a few of the blocks each week, with the actual border decision to be decided on later! Thanks for linking to Quilting JetGirl’s tutorial – that’s going to be really helpful!

I really like where you are going with your layout each week. It’s pleasing to the eye!

Love your geese! They look great and I am sure the mess is only to your eyes. It is hard when it gets bigger than your design wall, which is what is going on in my sewing room too!

Hi Wendy! Just a few more rounds – it seems like this year the event is speeding by. Your geese look perfect to me – I can’t wait to see how you complete this next border. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Your pretty bird and rows are beautiful.
I am following along and my piece is getting out of hand also. I like your idea of wait and see. I may wait and see what the next row will be to keep the size manageable.
I can’t figure out how to link up but I can send you a picture of my progress so far. I am using batiks from my scrap pile and a background yardage that I was excited for the color but not the print.
Thank you for being so inspirational and sharing links in your posts that introduce us to other’s quilting projects.
Quilting is in my Blood
I look forward to seeing how you combine your flying geese with the next border.

Lovely pops of colour.

I’m starting to see a little bird hiding happily among a tree or shrubbery of various quilt leaves [blocks]. :o). Looking good! I never minded flying geese. Maybe because some of my first quilts were made up of them?

This is exactly what I am planning to do. Make a stack of flying geese this week and see how best to use them when I know what the next round calls out for. I’ll go check out Yvonne’s tutorial. Thank you!

Your SAHRR is such fun! I’ve got my plan for the flying geese, but haven’t made any yet. I’m debating on which method to use, Yvonne’s or Bonnie’s. I get good results with both.

I love your mix of gray and very spring green—underlining the first site of a robin in spring. And the bits of color in each border add to that feeling. Your possible flying geese row will continue that. Like you, I’ve paused between rows. I still have to trim my hourglass blocks. For once my geese came out to my desired 1 1/2 x 3 inches.

So now I am interested in seeing what you’re going to do with that border. Love the colors!!
