SAHRR Border 4
It’s SAHRR Border 4 today, and I’m here to show you my border. This week, Brenda of Songbird Designs is our host and she has chosen the Square in a Square block. I’m so glad you’re here, and I hope you read through my post, then hop over to Songbird Designs to see Brenda’s border and any tips or instructions she has to share!
Eva’s Progress
Before I show you my next border, let’s take a look at what Eva has been doing this week. Eva has a very busy job right now, so she has been sneaking in her sewing when she can. For her triangles border, she found her triangle idea in Nicholas Ball’s book, Inspiring Improv. That’s a favorite book of mine, and I have made an improv triangle quilt using his method. I love what Eva has done with her triangles! Here is a close up, so. you can see the cute fabric.
She’s made them dance around the border – isn’t that fun?!
My Border 4
I don’t do well with Square in a Square blocks – don’t ask me why. I have tried all kinds of methods and templates. So I kept my blocks to a minimum this week. I also ripped the border apart more times than I really wanted to, because I couldn’t decide on white or blue. So who knows? This border will either stay as is, or get changed.
I also wanted to keep that red to a minimum; it adds a pop of color, but too much and it steals the show. I don’t know if I like the blue borders back to back. So I’ll live with this for the week and we’ll see what happens. My quilt now measures 29-1/2″ square.
Don’t forget that this week you will link up with Brenda at Songbird Designs – you have until Sunday to get linked up. Here’s the schedule:

The wide blue really does tone it down. I really like what you’re doing with the little pops of color in the middle and in the corners.
Tracie
I think the blue border works well. And I agree that square in a square blocks are tricky!
Kate
Eva’s dancing triangles are really fun, those work really well with the rest of her quilt. As I found out this week, sometimes blocks just don’t cooperate, but your square in a square blocks look good. Hard call on keeping the border blue or changing to white, your current version looks good.
Eva
Kate, thank you 🙂
Yes, my biggest fear is have enough fantasy to create a quilt in harmony without knowing what comes week by week…. But learned from last year SAHRR … and be prepared a little bit more, the rest is improv… lol

Eva’s fabrics are fantastic. I think you did good on your square in a squares! Love the blue and the pops of color. About how big do you want it to be eventually?
Eva
Thank you for your compliment. The fabrics are long time with me and now going as a quilt at the end to a friend of mine.

I know I find it challenging to decide how to arrange the colours for borders. i’m always wondering is this too busy, or it it too much for my eye. The great thing about this adventure is that its a great learning and thinking opportunity. Knowing that we can changeup whatever we wish is a good feeling. Thanks

I like your pops of red, Wendy! It brings the red back to connect to your two color border. My square-in-a-square blocks are often wonky, and I’m never sure what I did wrong, either. But I keep making them!
Eva
The square in square looks good in this colour combination Wendy. Please do not use a seemripper. Its a lot of harmony in this colour composition. „Only“ two more borders. So much February fun. Its amazing to see how the projects grow and develop. Have a great week!

I think the blue was a good choice. I am sorry you have so much trouble with them. Let ‘s chat the next time you want to make one. I love the way this is coming together.

I think you have the right amount of red for a little pop and not a big bang! Eva is doing a nice job with her improv too.
Eva
Vicki, you find the right words… I love Wendys squares as well very much. Mine will be much more work to finish, but the lovely comments help me to stay tuned and work (sew).
Thanks for your motivational comment 🙂
Bernie
Wendy – your s-i-s blocks look great. I like the bit of red this round adds and also think the green cornerstones are lovely. Making great progress!
Eva: Love the improv triangles. They make your border look whimsical as they are dancing along.
Eva
Thank you so much for your comment Bernie! :-)))
Brenda @ Songbird Designs
I think your blue border looks nice, but can also see a white for alternating with the blue also. I think you just have to decide on that. Sorry you had a problem with the square in a square blocks. I think they look great. Mine are far from perfect but they are fun, I think.
Eva: I love how your triangles are dancing around the border and that some are multi-colored! Great job!
Eva
Thank you Brenda! Checked your page and did not see any problems with yours! So much fun to see all the different ideas of interpretation to do the border.
Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl
I like the blue for this border. I know you don’t like making square in a square blocks, but I wonder if the centers were white if that would create the continuity you are looking for?
Katherine Duquette
I think your blue is a perfect choice for this round. Square in a square will be a challenge.
Eva’s solution immediately reminds me of elephant walk. It’s a fun solution for her round.
I wonder if improv could be used for square in square!!
Thank you for sharing both quilts. Have a Wendyful week sewing and creating.
Eva
Katherine, uhhh 🙂 you give me a task to think harder about how to build it… I was so happy to find a math tableau at quilting jetgirls page for square in a square. And I could not find the historical explanation for this blog. A diamant ( engagement ring) wish to get?
But first rethinking my idea now.

That is so cool! I love how the one block in the centre of the borders makes your eyes dance around the quilt!

how graphic! it reminds me of little gems stitched into a necklace

Wow, it’s a striking piece. I think the blue works very well. Look forward to seeing your next ’round’.
Nice triangles, Eva.
Eva
Mariss, yes the blue in Wendys border is perfect. Thanks for liking my triangles.
Emily
I like the blue background and the contrast with the pops of red.
Quilting is in my Blood
Eva’s dancing triangles are so joyful! I wish we lived near each other. I’d happily do all your square in a square units (paper pieced of course!) and you could do those wonderful improv curves for me! I think your SAHRR project is looking lovely.

Your minimal Square in a Square blocks work just fine, Wendy. Seam ripping and all!!

Hi Wendy! I love how you used the square in a square block. I don’t think the pops of red are overtaking the center piece – it is doing its job of pulling the red out of the center to shine. I also love Eva’s dancing triangles. Nice job, both of you! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

I love the mosaic glass fabric – wow – it goes great with the elephants!
JanineMarie
I like the blue border because it helps focus on those sweet apron triangles. White might have overpowered them. And your little pop of red with the squares seems just right, too. You’ve got this! Eva’s elephant quilt is fun to see on your blog, too. What a fun way to do improv triangles.
Janine @ Rainbow Hare
I think those square in squares are perfect. You are doing a brilliant job of keeping the colours balanced in this quilt 🙂
