SAHRR Parade

It’s here! Today is the SAHRR Parade, the day when those of us participating in the Stay at Home Round Robin 2022 hosted by Quilting Gail get to show off our finished quilts. I am looking forward to seeing all the lovely finishes today, aren’t you?

Sometimes, however, plans run amok and don’t turn out as we planned. I was excited to show you my finished quilt top today, which has been in Connie’s capable hands for the quilting. Unfortunately, Connie’s longarm went on the fritz, so she hasn’t been able to finish my quilt. I promise I’ll show you as soon as it’s finished, sometime in the near future!

In the meantime, here’s my finished top, just to refresh your memory.

While I was cleaning up my sewing space after all that improv work, I came across some orphan blocks that didn’t get used in the quilt top. Initially, I had planned my last border to look like this.

My idea was to tie in that wavy border once again in the last border. Once it was up on the design wall, however, it just didn’t work. The yellow dominated a bit too much, so off it came and I went with the border you see above.

So what to do with all those little units and blocks? I pulled them together for a fun little mini.

Gail had some fun with her orphan blocks, too, and came up with a clever use for hers. You can read her post here. You’ll see my mini there, too – she was kind enough to highlight it. Thanks, Gail! Anyway, play with those orphan blocks if you have some, and see what you come up with.

Don’t forget to label your quilt, too! I was at a quilt museum this weekend (more about that in another post), and there were several quilts labeled “maker unknown”. How sad to see such lovely work, and not be able to honor the maker.

Alrighty, I’ll let you know when my quilt is finished. Meanwhile, check out the rest of the quilts who have linked up for the SAHRR Parade over at Quilting Gail – I’m heading there right now. Join me?

hope you get your quilt back soon and sorry her machine went on the fritz for her that is frustrating for her I’m sure and her clients. Love the mini

Hi Wendy! Aww shucks but it will be fun to see the finish whenever it is. I have to agree with your call about the yellow domination – it did demand attention and draw it to those cute little shoo fly blocks. It was so much fun this year and it will be nice to see who played along and how their pieces turned out. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

SAHRR is just made for improv quilting! So much flexibility in terms of the direction you can take your top in. So true about all the “anonymous” quilts in museums. The Quilt Alliance had suggested that for National Quilting Day this past weekend, quilters should go and label any of their own quilts that need them.

We will wait patiently to see your SAHRR finish, Wendy! That’s got to be frustrating for your quilter, though – hard to make a living when your machine is down. I do love what you did with the leftover pieces. And thanks for the reminder about labeling the quilt. I’ve gotten very lax about that and need to go back and add labels to lots of quilts!

You must be tickled with your quilt. Love the result. Thanks for showing the 2 versions of the last round as it’s always interesting to see “in progress” thinking.

I absolutely LOVE your improv SAHRR!!! It turned out great! I can’t wait to see what magic Connie does in the negative spaces! And of course, I love your table runner made with the left-overs! Thank you for being a co-host with the SAHRR – it wouldn’t have worked without your participation!!! 🙂

I’m so glad when orphan bits and pieces get put to use! And what good use they are! Too bad about Connie’s LA, but I’m sure a good spa treatment will fix her up in no time. Can’t wait to see what magic she works again!

I just love this. Sorry about Connie’s machine. My machine went on the fritz, but is back….miraculously. I have no idea why! Anyway, I love what you did with this and yes, mine will be labeled with a signature block. Now to decide if I want to finish quilting on the longarm or domestic (which I started it on….).

I really love this, Wendy! The solid colors are so fun, and I never would have thought to do improv for every round and I love your results.

I love any and all looks at your quilt – I’ve loved watching it unfold. We will all look forward to seeing Connie’s magic on it. Clever use of those “leftovers”!

  • Needle and Foot

Love your RR project – it is so spring like to me. Connie will do her magic and then we can see it again, I hope?
Orphan blocks – I have tons and then are all in one bin. After we move and get settled it will be hard to choose what to work on. I can’t wait!!

What a spectacular quilt top. You must be very pleased and proud of yourself. I agree that that the yellow in the border would have been too heavy, and now you have the double bonus of a bright mini quilt as a companion piece. Congratulations on a truly spectacular piece of work.
