SAHRR Round 6
Today it’s SAHRR Round 6 – time to reveal the next border for our Stay at Home Round Robin! I have had so much fun seeing all the different star borders – wonky or traditional – you all added to your quilts this past week! Thank you all for linking up! We have such a fun variety of quilts taking shape. I hope you are enjoying this as much as we are!
Our host this week is Susan over at Quilt Fabrication, and her block is the log cabin. Make sure you go visit her blog for her tips and to see her border. You can visit her blog here.
The log cabin block was the very first quilt block I ever made, so this block brings back so many memories. You can read the story behind that first little quilt in this post.
For my quilt this week, I’ll be showing my partial border. My log cabin blocks will wait to join next week’s blocks. My borders will be added to only the top and bottom of my quilt, in order for me to keep my quilt to the size that fits my quilt hanger.
As you plan your log cabin blocks, don’t forget to consider variations on log cabin blocks. It might be fun to spend a little time on Pinterest There are so many variations on this block – center, off-center, curved; courthouse steps (and variations on that), etc.
I chose to go with the traditional log cabin block, although mine have a dark blue center square. I made twelve 4-inch (unfinished) blocks for my two borders. Then I played around with them a bit.
I could make a ribbon pattern.
Or maybe alternate them for a fun tumbling look.
How about this layout, so they look like diamonds or beads (didn’t opt for this one, since my log cabin units would’ve had to been 2″ square!).
If I were adding all four borders, I’d consider making my corners like this.
In the end, I kept mine simple, centering them in the middle of my borders. Here’s the unfinished peek.
Doesn’t look like much, does it?! Not to worry – it looks pretty good with next week’s round, so you’ll have to come back next Monday and see my finished top.
In the meantime, be sure to visit the rest of the SAHRR crew today to see their log cabin borders:

Looking good! And your blocks are so neat. I assume that you used quite narrow strips. Can’t wait to see what happens next

I can’t wait to see what the next round is! Your log cabin blocks look good.

Love Log Cabin quilt blocks. Currently making Down Home Darling/Temecula Quilt Company online–check it out if you have not seen it. It’s a great scrap eater! Enjoying your posts.

It’s a cliffhanger! It’ll be fun to see next week. I really like your spin on this quilt. I only made four log cabin blocks for a wall hanging. That’s it! I plan to change that, though, because I love how they look. I impulsively bought a Creative Grids ruler to make small, wonky log cabin blocks for a table runner. Hopefully it’ll be a fun summer project.

Looks like your quilt is wearing a tiara!!! You’ve got us on the edge of our seats!!!

Hmm… I’m interested to see where this will go. Looking forward to seeing how you will combine this with next week’s border prompt, Wendy!

Log cabin is another of my favorite blocks! I like the way yours look like little mountains peeking up from the top of your quilt!

Your quilt is looking great….the log cabin block is my absolute favorite — it’s so versatile! Looking forward to your next step!

this is shaping up nicely – I think what’s helping it to not look too cluttered is your color palette choice. the cream helps to create visual space while still being scrappy!
Log cabin was my first intro beyond basic one-patch and has continued to be the technique (not always yielding a recognizable log cabin block) I gravitate towards for my own designs.

the wonky stars look great and I really like the log cabins

Love this look…sort of like an art deco building crown on your quilt. I am sure it works perfect well with next week’s round. Look forward to seeing it, post move and maybe by then I will get stars and bars (logs) and whatever is next done!

That’s going to be very pretty. I made a quilt once that had a log cabin border..scrappy. It was so pretty and colorful. How many rounds in your round robin?

Hi Wendy! I knew we were kindred sisters with the LC being your first quilt block, too. It really is a versatile block, isn’t it?! You shared all kinds of different layout options and I love the one you settled on (except the going around the corner is a COOL idea, too). This layout reminds me of mountains of a sort. Won’t it be FUN to see all the final rounds next week?! Can’t wait. ~smile~ Roseanne

It’s so fun to see each of the ideas people have for the new round. Your log cabins are so pretty in those colors, Wendy! Possibilities are swirling around in my head!

These little blocks are very pretty. I can’t believe how many of us have identified the log cabin block as our first quilt! It was back in the early 80s for me. I love the way they will be centered top and bottom and look forward to next weeks border tying it all together.
Susan
Looking good! Can’t wait to see how this plays with next week’s block.
Sandra
Ooh you know how to keep us hanging! I like that you showed what you would have done had you been doing all four borders. Isn’t it interesting how we remember our very first quilt block we made and that it is near and dear to our hearts still? 🙂

LOVE your log cabin blocks … they look so warm and inviting! Can’t wait to see it with the last round! 🙂

Those must be tiny pieces!! I love your log cabins, and I like the accent in the middle of the row the way you’ve laid them out. Fun! Can’t wait to see how you add in next week’s!

Wendy I love this addition to your SAHRR, but man they must have been fussy to make. They are so tiny! Good on you. 😉

It has been a lot of fun seeing how everyone is adapting the prompts to their SAHRR. Looking forward to seeing how you add in the next prompt.
