Santa Fe Snowflake
I have my Santa Fe Snowflake block to show you today, which is my fourth block for the Pieces of the Old Santa Fe Trail quilt along hosted by Melva Loves Scraps. With each block release, Melva shares a bit of history about the Old Santa Fe Trail. Even if you’re not sewing along – but you still can join in – it’s worth visiting Melva and reading the history tidbits. You can read the latest post here.
Incidentally, the photo above is a view from our drive through the Kit Carson National Forest, just outside of Cimarron, New Mexico. If you ever happen to drive through Cimarron, you’ll want to stop in at Hiker’s Coffee and pick up a latte or a tea for the drive.
As I was reading Melva’s post and marveling at the amount of freight the wagon train transported, it made me think about how I pack for a trip to New Mexico. The first time we went in April, I foolishly thought that Santa Fe would be much warmer than Minnesota, so I tossed in my capris, my Birkies and (thankfully) my sneakers. I was wise enough to toss in a light sweater.
We were having a wonderful time, taking drives, enjoying the sun, when out of the blue it started to snow. It was nothing like Minnesota snow, but it was snow. I now know I need to bring layers, so when I pack now, I toss in this and that and more. BigJ knows exactly what he needs to pack. I, on the other hand, like to have options, so my suitcase might be more fully loaded like those wagons!
This block looks much more complicated than it is. Melva’s instructions are clear and easy to follow, and I had this block done in no time. Can you see the little snowflakes in my blue fabric? I thought it was an appropriate addition to the block! Melva actually gives you two choices for this block – a snowflake, or a spiderweb. You’ll have to go to her site to see how the spiderweb is made. I much prefer the snow!
Here are my four blocks, all together.
I hope you enjoyed seeing my Santa Fe Snowflake. Are you sewing along with the Pieces of the Old Santa Fe Trail QAL? If so, are you making a snowflake or a spiderweb? I’m curious!
Don’t forget to pop over and read the story in Melva’s post. It’s a good one!
If you’d like to read about my other blocks, you can find the posts here and here.

Yes, I did spot the snowflakes and am intrigued by the design of the block. It does look complicated — but I take your word for it that it is simple to sew. This is going to be another beautiful quilt. How many blocks to go?

Love your snowflake block and that snowflake print is perfect for it.

Hi Wendy! Cute block and really cute fabric with the little snowflakes. The block DOES look complicated. Melva really shares a good story along with the release of each block. ~smile~ Roseanne

Beautiful photo at the top of your post, Wendy! That kind of view is the perfect example of why I love the Southwest. Your snowflake block is really neat! I’m enjoying seeing each new block you make – great colors!

How fun to create a quilt that brings back travel memories, in a different way than reproducing a photograph. And I admire all the crisp corners in all your blocks!

What a great collection of quilt blocks. I do love the snowflake block and the fabric you used. I’m downloading the blocks but have not yet started sewing. I enjoy each story that accompanies the blocks. BTW, did you know Nancy Turner has another sequel to her book “These is my Words?” It is called “Light Changes Everything”.

Oh, that’s a lovely block and would be really beautiful repeated making a finished quilt look so much more complicated (like it was set on point). Fun!

Ooh that’s a nice block, and I love the Santa Fe photo! I agree with Yvonne, too.

I love this block and it is fun to see all your other blocks. Santa Fe is a place I would like to get to one day.

Another beautifully finished block Wendy. Love those little snowflakes on your fabric. Your packing issue reminds of life in the North Country. Tourists would visit in August with shorts and flip flops and be so surprised when they experienced snowfall 😉
