Santa House
Santa House is my next holiday pillow for the 2022 holiday season. The block for the Santa House pillow is from the Rainbow Neighborhood pattern just released by Sandra of mmmQuilts. If you’ve made any of Sandra’s patterns, you know that she keeps them simple and quick. This fun little neighborhood comes together quickly, with 10 house blocks and some fun little additions. Sandra gives you four size options for this design. A pillow, a bench pillow, a throw, and a twin-size quilt. Along with that, there is plenty of room to play with the blocks to create your own combination, too. I’ll give you the skinny on how you can get the pattern at the end of this post. First, let’s look at Santa House.
The snow was lightly falling . . .
The front door was decorated for the holiday season . . .
Even the candy canes showed up —
Santa is in the house!
I had so much fun pulling together the elements for this house block. The pattern lends itself well to fussy cutting, and the houses can be made with or without windows over the door. There are options for the quilt block in the house, too, so you can mix it up and create your own unique neighborhood.
I’ve had so much fun with this pillow, and I’ve been thinking about how versatile this pattern could be:
- A personal BOM – with 10 house blocks and a few other secondary blocks, you could do one house block a month, then finish the other secondary units in the other two. A great way to use up scraps and have a complete quilt top by the end of the year.
- In the throes of January (or maybe those humid days of summer), wouldn’t it be fun to make a quilt in icy winter blues? I can see frosty houses, hearts, and leaves!
- Valentine’s Day – how about a little love in those houses – fussy cut hearts and fabrics – fun for either a small or large project!
The pillow finishes at 22-1/2 inches, a perfect size for a floor pillow or lounging on the sofa, or gracing a chair. All of the fabrics used for my pillow are from my stash, many from my scraps.
Santa House joins my other recent pillow, Geometric Reindeer. I think they look pretty good together!
Here’s a photo of the Rainbow Neighborhood throw quilt made by Sandra, so you can see the variety of houses and blocks.

Happy sewing!

It’s always fun when I “know” both the person writing the blog and the person she’s writing about. I do love the little house block.

I so love your house! And Wendy I loved the writing you did to introduce the elements. You always choose just the right fabric for the perfect spot, like happy Santa there. And yes, looks beautiful next to your lovely reindeer.

Your house pillow is adorable, Wendy! I love all your fun details – Santa waving out the window made me smile. I’ve been admiring Sandra’s house blocks for a long time, so I think I will need that pattern!

Adorable pillow, Wendy! And very versatile, too! I have seen similar house blocks…each filled with a different star. So fun! 🙂

I love this! Your ideas are perfect…a good one to enjoy for a leisurely BOM for the year!

A beautiful pillow with all the attention to detail that you gave it. I can see doing a block (or 2) of the month and having a wonderful quilt at the end. All the optional window treatments would be lovely. And your stash (and scraps) of Christmas fabrics are so lovely.

That looks like some fun fabric play and I love all of your ideas for more! My first QAL was a house for every month and I had so much fun picking and choosing. (But silly me, I have never displayed it. It’s sitting in a cedar chest! I kinda forgot about it but there’s a pic on my blog somewhere.). How fun to have a companion for your reindeer pillow.

Wendy I love how you teased us with the details until we got to see the final adorable pillow! It’s just perfect with your geometric reindeer. Thank you so very much for making this, and having such a blast with it. Like you, my head is spinning with possibilities, BOM, seasonal houses and trees, just a riot they were to make over the course of that year I made and designed them, and now even more ideas flowing. Thank you again so much!
