Squiggles and Wiggles
Squiggles and wiggles makes me think of little toddlers running too and fro, with gleeful laughter and joy. The quilt top I’ll show you today is a bit like that too.
A couple of my quilty friends encouraged me to join in the Squiggles Quilt Along hosted by Christa Watson. The quilt along has a nice pace, and I’m happy I’ve joined in.
The fabric for my quilt was an impulse buy while shopping on a trip. I purchased a layer cake of Alison Glass Sunprint fabric at one quilt shop and her Sunprint text fabric at another. I didn’t do it purposely, in fact, I didn’t know the text print was an Alison Glass fabric until I got home.
The fabric sat on my shelf until this QAL came along. I wanted a pattern that would show the Sunprint fabric well, and this pattern was just right for that. I posted a little teaser picture on Instagram yesterday. Did you see it?
I enjoyed sewing it together, with all those bright colors surrounding me!
Here’s a photo all laid out on my bed. Can you picture all those joyful little toddlers squiggling and wiggling? I have to admit that I was like a squirmy, squiggly toddler while I sewed those little 2.5″ squares to the 5″ squares. I lost my focus often, and took quite a few breaks!
Want to see the blocks a little closer?
We were encouraged to keep the bonus triangles while we made the blocks. Did I? Of course I did! They are all nestled in a little basket, waiting to be pressed open.
Wait — Where are the Wiggles?
While I was sewing the Squiggle blocks, I realized there were gray and black pieces that I didn’t want to use in the Squiggles quilt. I set them aside until later. That’s where the Wiggles come in. I had a few left over and decided to make a fun little Wiggles mini.
It was so much fun quilting this mini. I happened to have Aurifil thread that matched all of the colors, except for the pink. The pink thread was 40 wt, the other center colors were 50 wt. Since the pink was 40 wt, I decided to use Aurifil Smoke in 40 wt for the gray fabric. I thought it would balance the bold pink (which was varigated) a bit. I stitched from one point to the other, using the colored thread first. Later I went back and added in the gray thread randomly to create a fun stitching pattern.
I did the machine quilting with my AcuFeed foot, which I love. I find excuses to use it. Haha. Here’s a view from the back.
The binding is a scrap piece of gray solid that matched well. The backing fabric is from my stash as well.
The next step for the Squiggles quilt is the quilting. That may have to wait for a bit for me, but I’m definitely looking forward to finishing it.
Linking up today with Beth from Cooking Up Quilts, and Beth at Love Laugh Quilt.
What have you been working on? I’d enjoy hearing about it!

Hi Wendy,
I just love the colors and fabrics in Squiggles (and Wiggles too for that matter). The newsprint background fabric is SO cool, and yet it doesn’t distract from the Sunprint. It sure is a nice bright and happy quilt top. I look forward to seeing how you’re going to quilt it! ~smile~ Roseanne

Wow, I love Squiggles and Wiggles — so clever! The quilting is great on Wiggles, perfect. You will get so much enjoyment from these quilts. I’m glad we did the quilt along together.

Thanks, Tracie, I’m glad we did the quilt along together too.

Thank you, Karen!

Your Squiggles reminds me of rick rack! It’s so fun and bright, a great project to brighten these cold days we’ve been having. Wiggles is just plain ole sweet-how big is it?

As I crawled into bed last night, I realized I forgot to note the size of the mini. It’s 9” x 18”.

Very cute and creative.

Ohh, I need to make that quilt!!! I have the book and fabric! Now to have the time!?! That red & white Bonnie Hunter quilt is going to take me awhile.
piecefulwendy
You’ll have to make one for sure, Nancy! Can’t wait to see that red & white quilt!

I did see your peek on IG! I’m so glad you shared the whole thing (plus bonus mini!) today. I love it! You know I love bright colors, and these AG prints are bold and happy 🙂 Do you have a recipient in mind?
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Louise! Actually I may keep this one, but we’ll see. Sometimes that changes!

Both the quilt and the bonus project came out great! I love text print fabrics, and yours sets off the happy bright “toddlers” beautifully. I also really like the added interest of the different quilting thread colors you used.

Thank you!

I’m glad you decided to be a Squiggle Sister and your quilt is gorgeous. I think we’re both in sync with our colors; I also did not include the black and dark navy blocks but did not think to make a mini with them. BTW, your points lined up perfectly-mine not so much, I have some under and overhangs due to a rookie mistake. I forget to check the size of my precuts/charm packs and they were not 5″ squares and then coupled with I used my own 5″ squares which were accurate. My quilt will make you giggle.
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Rose! Actually mine didn’t line up that well, but the pattern is forgiving enough that you don’t see it.

That’s a great teaser photo and a great quilt. The Allison Glass fabrics work so perfectly in the quilt. Nice little mini as well.

Thank you!

I love the idea of using two colors of thread crossing each other in the quilting of the mini!

Thanks!

It turned out great!!! I love Alison Glass… I really should stop hoarding and use it!
piecefulwendy
Oh, I get the hoarding thing with pet fabrics 😊

I don’t tend to buy precuts of a particular line of fabric — but your quilt may change my mind! Love the looks of all these squiggles and wiggles. Nicely done.
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Bonnie! Precuts can be fun to work with. They get you a step ahead by not having to do as much cutting. You might enjoy working with them.

Yep I saw that teaser on IG but only got here today! I LOVE this Wendy! Have long loved AG sun prints, and will now look for a 10″ stacker, good idea, so I can have some of all of them. The text print is perfect too! Love the mini and how you quilted it with the different colours. Such a cool look on the back too. 🙂
