Stay at Home Round Robin Border 5
Today is my day to share the Stay at Home Round Robin Border 5. Have you been sewing along with us? It’s been such fun to see all the variations as our quilts grow with each border. Here’s the list of the borders we’ve added so far:
- Border 1 – Piano Keys
- Border 2 – Plus Block
- Border 3 – Flying Geese
- Border 4 – Checkerboard
Are you ready for today’s border? Drumroll, please . . . Border 5 is Wonky Stars! If you’ve followed my blog long enough, you won’t be surprised that I chose something wonky, a little bit of a nod to my love of improv.
To make my Wonky Stars, I used this tutorial from Aunt Em’s Quilts. If you have a different method you prefer, go ahead and use that one.
Some of you may not wish to make Wonky Stars, and that’s okay. Just make a star border of your choice. BUT . . .
Just try making one wonky star for me, huh? I really think you will enjoy making them, and they are so darn cute!
The concept of the wonky star is pretty simple. It’s a basic 9-patch unit, with star points added. All of your squares should be cut to the same size. I made two sizes of stars for my border. The smaller one finished at 3 inches, so my squares were all cut at 1-1/2 inches.
For one border strip, I knew I needed four 3-inch blocks, which meant that I needed 16 squares for the star points. I gathered those squares, and sewed the first star points on one side, and then the other side, chain piecing them. I found it made the construction of the units a bit quicker.
I decided that I wanted my stars to dance across the border, so I added a strip of background fabric to each small star.
The larger stars finish at 4-1/2 inches, and I set them at the four corners and in roughly the middle of each border.
I laid out my border, alternating the background strip up or down on the small stars so they appear to dance.
And now my Stay at Home Round Robin Border 5 is complete!
At this point, my quilt measures 44 inches wide, which is just about the limit for my quilt hanger. The two remaining borders will be added to the top and bottom of my quilt.

Wendy I love the dancing wonky stars! I’ve been wondering what your border would be, but admit to being surprised. 😉

Love your wonky stars, this is my favourite border so far!

Your quilt looks great with the stars dancing around the border. I haven’t made this block before and think it would be a lot of fun.

Looks great. I think it’s interesting that you’re up to 44 inches — I’m at 46 inches.

Nothing like a wonky star! Great border #5 choice.

I like the idea of wonky stars for this round. They match your starting block well. I have been lookoing for a block to use up random scrap fabric pieces. The scrappy stars would be a good choice. Happy quilting.

Your quilt looks great! Love the wonky star border!

When I finished my checkerboard border and was looking at the quilt as it stands now, I was thinking it needed more stars! So, thanks, Wendy! I love wonky stars, especially your scrappy ones. I’ve got lots of small pieces left from cutting for previous rounds, so wonky stars will be perfect for this week’s round.

Looks like your linky party worked fine! Wonky stars were the perfect addition as it shows more neutral for calming effect.

I love your stars!!! This is the perfect addition on your top. My piecing is so imperfect, if I sent a picture of my saw tooth stars you’d see they are a little wonky 🙂

Wendy, those stars add a breath of fresh air to the more predictable precision of the other borders. Just the right amount of eye-rest IMHO. Perfect timing to introduce such a design in the Round-Robin process.
The tutorial is the best for using up scraps, too! Thank you for linking me to this video – I’ll be chain piecing a few of these in the near future for sure.

Those wonky stars are so cute and they really do dance! This is coming together very nicely.

That made the perfect addition to your quilt. It really looks nice the way that you placed them.

I love this border! I have difficulty intentionally being wonky but I do quite well at it not trying! LOL Your quilt is looking lovely!

Yours is looking fab and the wonky stars are great! I figured you would do something wonky – stars or triangles. Now, off to see if I can incorporate this with the current block…. I may make 4 and see what happens next week…

Hi Wendy! Kudos to picking out my favorite Round of all. I loved making these cute little wonky-star blocks. They were fun to make and gosh, you just can’t help smiling when you get one complete. The dancing idea is perfect-o! I only added them to the top and bottom . . . but there is still time to change my mind for the sides! Thanks for the linking party, my friend. ~smile~ Roseanne

These look wonderful in your fabrics and on your quilt. I like to make wonky stars blocks, too, but for my SAHRR I may be a rebel and choose another star block. Thanks for choosing and hosting … 🙂 Pat

I love how you placed your stars in this border so that they aren’t all in a straight row – looks great!

What a perfect addition to a quilt that centers on the flag. And lots of nice scrappy goodness going on!

It just gets better and better! Love those stars, they really do dance around the edge of the quilt. Also love the way they echo the star in your central block.
You have inspired me to take up a local round robin being run by Bernina in South Africa. Off I go to my work table to plan that first block!

Wonky stars are a great added element to this QAL, Wendy! Great job doing the link up, too!!!

So cute! I have used wonky stars like this before and love them. Your idea of off-setting them was perfect. Love that bit of movement it added.

Your quilt is and has been so, so cute! I need to get busy and catch up. 🙂

I like the dancing stars. A very fun addition. It’s been interesting seeing how each quilter has approached each border. Lookign forward to seeing all the final quilts in a few weeks.

You were right to put some separation of the stars between each other. After the checkerboard round, more negative space is a good idea for your top. Good job! Liz in Houston
