Sunrise Sunset Mini Quilt
The Sunrise Sunset mini quilt is no longer a UFO. Admittedly, I had to let it brew for a bit while I pondered how I wanted to quilt it. The quilt top hung over my stair banister for a few weeks; each time I walked by, it reminded me to get it finished. Here’s my original drawing of the quilt.
I made the mini quilt using HSTs. All of the fabrics are left over from making my Postcards from Sweden quilt. The background fabric is Kona Snow.
The colors in the quilt remind me of the beautiful Florida sunsets over the ocean that we enjoyed while visiting our daughter. Actually, dinner in Cedar Key, Florida was the inspiration for this mini quilt.
The mini quilt is my own design that I drew up during Sandra of mmm!Quilts Instagram challenge, 30 Quilt Designs in 30 Days. The quilt measures 24″ x 32″.
For the quilting, the idea came to me of waves on the water, and heat waves in the air. That of course meant I’d get to quilt wavy lines again – yay! I decided to use thread colors to match each row, and I was happy to find that I had almost all of the matching thread. You can see most of them here.
The quilt backing is a Sharon Holland fabric for Art Gallery Fabric. It is a low volume print with little geometric designs.
I love the scrunchy look of the Warm & Natural batting, even before washing.
A final view of Sunrise Sunset laid out on my lawn.

Have a great weekend, my quilty friends!

Crap well I think my comment disappeared into the ether. If it’s double please delete this one. I get just as much a rush when seeing the real life version of one of the challenge quilts (which wasn’t over 30 days but 65/70, and even that slower pace once or twice felt stressful ha!) as seeing my own patterns sewn up by others. Your designs are fabulous and if you do publish this one I would fit it in if you need a tester!

Only one comment here, Sandra! You’re right, it wasn’t over 30 days! For some reason I had that in my head. So glad you like the quilt. Thanks to you hosting the challenge, or it may not have ever been drawn up!
Karen

Hi Wendy! This is such a happy and lovely little quilt. I just adore the quilting you chose for it, and your reasoning and story behind this beauty makes it even more special. Does this have a nice place to hang in your studio now? I hope so, but should you ever tire of it you know where to send it. Happy Saturday! ~smile~ Roseanne
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Roseanne! I do have a place to hang it, just need to make a rod pocket. Enjoy your weekend!

It’s fabulous, Wendy! Isn’t it fun to get one of those challenge designs actually sewn up? Those wavy lines were the perfect choice for the quilting 🙂
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Leanne! It is really fun to get one sewn up! Now I want to do a few more!
Mary Marcotte
Beautiful finish! I love the wavy lines. They really make the quilt. I thought of heat waves (lots of those here in Louisiana) before reading the words. (love when that happens)
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Mary! I love it when that happens too!
