Tecolote Block
The Tecolote block is the final block in the Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail sew along hosted by Melva Loves Scraps. I’m so grateful to Melva for coming up with this idea for a sew along, and for sharing excerpts from her relative, Marian Russell, author of the book Land of Enchantment. If you’ve been following along, reading the excerpts and sewing the blocks, I’d encourage you to read the entire book. It is an interesting history.
I followed the same colors as Melva used in her block, finding a deep navy floral which I have decided is for Marian and her longing for a Brussels carpet. While the fabric looks nothing like the carpet, the floral made me think of it.
I am excited to piece the blocks together for the top, and I will be doing that soon. Of course, I have some other projects I need to get done before I can do so. I hope to get them done this week so I can begin the piecing.
So I’m just a bit bittersweet about the Tecolote block, although I thoroughly enjoyed stitching it up. From now on, when we go visit Santa Fe, my thoughts will turn to Marian Russell and her memories of traveling the Santa Fe Trail. Thanks again, Melva, for this fun sew along with you!

This has been a wonderous journey along the Santa Fe Trail…sorry to see it end, but excited to see it finished and soon to be completed as a quilt-memoir.

I thought the block was pretty when I saw it on Melva’s blog. I like that you thought of Marian and the carpet she wanted when making it.

I looked at her blog from the link and the book sounds familiar I will need to look and see if I have it and read it again.

Hi Wendy! Your quilt top is going to be so lovely with all of these blocks together. The fabrics – ooh-la-la. Gorgeous. I look forward to seeing what layout you choose as well the setting. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

That’s a beautiful block, Wendy! I love the colors you chose, and I can see why the blue reminded you of a fancy carpet. Not sure where you took your header photo that you use for these posts, but I took a very similar one over the weekend when we were driving through western Kansas. You have to love the wide-open plains!

I’ve enjoyed following Marian’s life travelling the Santa Fe trail and will definitely miss the excerpts. I’ve ordered the book and look forward to reading it all. Your block is lovely and I look forward to seeing your finished quilt.

That deep navy floral fabric absolutely reminds me of an expensive rug. It has been fun to read about your blocks and their history, and this one in particular, since the town of Tecolote is just down the road.
