UFO Finish – Al’s Star

I have a UFO Finish to show today, and I’m feeling pretty good about that!

UFO Finish - I finished this star quilt just in time for July. The pattern is by Tish at The Madd Quilter (TishnWonderland) - piecefulthoughts.com

This is a pattern I tested for Tish at The Madd Quilter a while ago. It was a fun pattern to make and went together quickly.

Quilting Design Dilemma

It’s taken me forever to decide on the quilting, but it came to me the other day and I had to ignore everything else and work on this. Part of the puzzle for me as far as the quilting was what to do with the big white center star design. I decided to play around a bit and use colored thread for the quilting. Pretty gutsy for me, since colored thread hides nothing. All my wobbles are right out there, for all to see!

I used blue and red threads in the center star and alternated them, with the stitching 1/2″ apart. I thought the colored threads would be a good way to bring the red and blue colors into the center of the quilt.

Once the center star was done, I used grey 40 wt thread for the remaining quilting. Using my walking foot, I did right angle straight stitching in the corners, then stitched the “v” angles in the side centers.

All of the fabrics are from my stash. The red fabric is from the 2015 Minnesota Shop Hop fabrics, and I used that on the back as well.

The quilt is 36″ square. I used Hobbs 80/20 batting and Aurifil threads.

I’m calling my quilt Al’s Star in honor of my dad. He dropped out of high school to join the Navy right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Although he passed away when I was 25 years old, I remember how much he loved his country. He was proud that he had served, and always prayed for our leaders, whether he agreed with them or not. I’m grateful for the time I had with Dad, and grateful that he served his country so well.

This is my UFO finish, all ready to hang for the month of July.

Linking up today with Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict, Sherry at Powered by Quilting, and Tish at The Madd Quilter.

This quilt is lovely…for more than one reason and what a wonderful tribute to your dad. I like how you used colored thread for the center and it’s finished just in time for July! Great job, thanks for sharing!

That is a wonderful finish, Wendy! I really like the design, and your quilting looks perfect for it, too. How to quilt and what thread color to use is always a tough decision for me, too. I love that you named it after your dad – what a great tribute to him!

And done in time for the 4th, perfect. I agree with Nancy, where are the wobbles-I don’t see any. You done good girl in all aspects of this quilt.

  • Barbara

That turned out great. Good call on the quilting. It looks fantastic. Nobody will see any wobbles, and after a week or so, you’ll be hard pressed to see them too.

Hi Wendy! Al’s Star is a very fitting tribute for your dad. I lost my dad at a young age as well (24) and miss him very much. You did a fabulous job on this piece. I love how you quilted it, and that center star really shines. Gorgeous! ~smile~ Roseanne

Just beautiful Wendy! I love the quilting and such a great tribute for your dad. Great job and love that you used colored thread. It is a challenge to get the courage to do that, but it looks great!

It’s a great quilt in honour of your Dad Wendy. I love your boldness in thread choice for the centre star. What wobbles? Did you say wobbles?

  • Louise Hornor

It’s a lovely tribute to your Dad, Wendy! I love how the quilting cross hatches in the center of the star. I’ll bet the texture feels so yummy! And you can never go wrong with red, white and blue. I hope you have it out on display this summer for all the patriotic holidays 🙂

What a wonderful tribute to your dad.I like that you finished it from stash too. Funny story about this same quilt which I did in Tish’s QAL: I’d lost my Beothuk Star quilt top for four days this week. Rather frantic I was becoming…found it rolled up carefully in my Fireburst quilt which had been on the kitchen table which is now in the garage because…renos… Great quilting job too!

    Happy Quilting! 🙂

What a wonderful quilt! The quilting is just perfect and good for you for going out of your way. Love the story about your father; so many brave young men joined the war as he did. My great uncle was one of them. Nice to have this beautiful quilt in his honor.

Your red, white and blue quilt is beautiful, design, quilting and all. How nice that you’ll have your father celebrating the 4 of July with you each time that you bring it out. Well done.

love your quilt. It stands out bold and proud. And I did similar quilting in my beothuk star. Great minds think alike, though I went for the blending thread this time, still have wobbly lines though
