Wednesday WIP Review

How about a Wednesday WIP Review from me? I’ll catch you up on some of my works-in-progress, because I have a few.

WIP Review #1: 2019 Monthly Color Challenge

Hosted by Jen at Patterns by Jen, this challenge has been one of my favorites this year. One block each month in a particular color. I’m thoroughly enjoying working from my stash and seeing these blocks stack up.

September’s color is light purple or lavender. Here’s my block.

I’m amazed at how much purple I actually have in my stash. I didn’t think I had much. Funny what you discover when you look for it. Ha!

WIP Review #2: Simply Sensational Summer Scrap Quilt

This mystery QAL, hosted by Kevin the Quilter, has been more fun than I anticipated. Encouraging us to work from our stash, I decided to go with red. I won a bunch of red scraps awhile back and I wanted to put them to use. This QAL uses only two colors. Choosing the second color was harder than I anticipated. At the encouragement of one of you, I decided to go with yellow/gold/tans. Here’s where I’m at with this project.

There’s another border or two to go on this one, but I really do like the way it’s coming together. The squares are 2.5 inches, sewn together as 4-patch units, then sewn together again, etc. The quilt design is inspired by an antique quilt Kevin found.

WIP Review #3: Barn Quilt QAL

Sherry at Powered by Quilting is hosting this QAL, and I decided to join in. I’m only making the mini quilts, so I can put them on my mini quilt wall. Here are the colors I’ve chosen for the first mini quilt.

I’ve decided to use solids, mostly Kona. For background fabric, I’ve chosen Grunge Fog. Here are all the pieces cut and partially sewn together. There’s still plenty of time to join in on this one if you’re interested! You can find more information at the link above.

WIP Review #4: A Little Organization

Over the weekend, I did a little cleaning in the quilt room. I have several mini quilts on my wall, but I also have a stack that needed to be stored somewhere.

A friend found me the perfect solution. I had shared with her that I had almost bought a side of a old crib at an antique shop that would have been great for a quilt display. She found me one a little later. I now have that hanging on my wall, thanks to BigJ.

The slats are about 4″ apart, just the right amount of room to layer the quilts. BigJ put some one-inch blocks of wood just behind the rails so that he could hang it on the wall with enough clearance. Right now, I have about 9 quilts hanging on the rack, but I could easily add more.

This rack also works really well for holding strips of fabric while working on a project, which is what I used it for before we hung it on the wall.

The last thing I did was conquer Mt. Scrappy, my bin of fabric scraps. I’ll spare you the photo; it wasn’t pretty. Those scraps are now all bagged and tagged. My next task is to figure out how to store them. I don’t have any floor, shelf or wall space available, so it will take some pondering.

Do you have a clever way of storing your fabric scraps? I’m looking for ideas!

Happy quilting, friends!

Wendy

You’ve got some fun projects in the works. Love how your Sensational Summer Scrappy Quilt is turning out, you picked a bold color palette and it really works.

Hi Wendy! What a fun update! I haven’t made my lavender block yet – still no sewing going on here. Love the fabrics you chose for lavender – those pinwheels really stand out so nicely. I also LOVE your red quilt. It looks great with the yellow/gold/tans – they compliment each other well. And that crib piece is just brilliant. What a great use for displaying smaller quilts as you have done. Very inspiring! ~smile~ Roseanne

I love that hanging rack – why don’t I ever think of things like that!! Great idea and you can hang so many of your small ones and trade them out as you wish

I love your hanging rack — what a clever idea! Your red quilt is gorgeous love the hints of gold and tan! I too don’t have much space available for scraps. I do put the scraps in a ziploc bag by color and place the ziploc bag in a large plastic container. The containers are under the bed in the guest room — the bedspread hides the containers — not convenient but it works.

What a fabulous way to hang your small quilts!! And so easy to pull one out to change spots with one on the wall too:) Your red quilt laying on the grass made me think of a watermelon!

I love your version of Kevin’s mystery! Your reds just glow 🙂

Do you have drawer space for your scraps? Maybe little open top bins that fit the drawer, one for each color. I’m using plastic baggies and it’s a total pain both to get the scraps into the bags and back out again! Alas, the inside of that drawer is exposed to carbon dust so I must bag them.

I store my scraps in plastic shoe boxes and they are tucked on the shelf behind the corresponding colour in my stash closet.

I love seeing everything you’re doing, Wendy! That purple block is beautiful – love the lavendar in it. The Barn Quilt QAL is enticing – I really like your color choices. The crib side used for quilt storage and display is just perfect – what a great idea! There are so many fun projects and ideas to join in on. I’m having a hard time resisting…

Oh my goodness, I love how that two-color mystery is coming along!!!! Great choices! All those reds make it look like a juicy piece of watermelon 🙂

Great scrappy mystery quilt, Wendy! Now, about that scrap organizing. No floor, shelf or wall space means you don’t have room for a wicker basket or fabric cube or something from IKEA??? Sounds like you need a hammock, like the kids with a million beanie babies, so it’s suspended in the air.

I love seeing all the projects. Hadn’t seen the scrap one, that is totally fab. Two colors would be hard as my scrap pile is not extensive. So, what did you do to that bin to organize it – just by color? Any trimming? I do some underbed storage and have a really narrow space in one closet where my shoe boxes are…but no space. So I like the hammock idea but maybe the cascading fruit basket would work…or suitcases that are empty. I also bought a tall wheeled cart at Michaels and I like that and have some projects and some scraps in that!
