Weekend Squirrel
A little weekend squirrel dropped in Friday, and it was, without a doubt, a Drop Everything And Make it (DrEAMi) project. If you’re not familiar with DrEAMi projects, these little projects, often referred to as squirrels, drop in and interrupt your usual flow of quilt projects. All other projects get swept to the side – it needs to be made – now!
Sandra of mmmQuilts is the creator of this fun idea and the DrEAMi linky party, which happens at the end of each month. She’s our mmMotivator, and is frequently visited by squirrels herself.
Sandra is responsible for my weekend squirrel, because it is her new quilt design, Let Your Star Shine, that led me happily astray for a few hours. This is definitely a pattern you’ll want to have in your stash of quick patterns! It is available in Sandra’s Etsy Shop. You’ll find the link to her shop on her website, right here.
It all started when I pulled this pink print for my focus fabric. Then I saw the Grunge fabrics and the Kona fabric. I read through the pattern. I started calculating how long it would take me. I started cutting.
Here are the fabrics, for those of you who might be interested.
- ACF Legendary by Pat Bravo (pink print)
- Basic Grey Grunge in Mustard
- Basic Grey Grunge in Dynasty (teal)
- Kona Kumquat
- Basic Grey Metropolitan Fog (shown upper left)
(Ignore the blue fabrics at the top of the photo – that’s one of the projects I should’ve been working on!)
I didn’t even stop to take progress photos, I was having way too much fun putting this quilt together. You could easily get this top finished in a day. My daughter came home, found me in my sewing room, and asked what I was working on so late in the day (it was 5:30 pm – I’m usually done quilting by then). I stopped a little later, when I had the inner star finished.
This is the perfect size quilt for a baby quilt or wall quilt. It would look great on a table, too! The quilt finishes at 36.5 inches.
There were left over HSTs, so I had a little fun with them and made a small runner. It measures 12.5″ x 24.5″ – a great way to use up those scraps!
Next will be quilting these two little projects – I’ll add that to the list of things I should’ve been working on before this little DrEAMi weekend squirrel dropped in.
Thanks, Sandra, for a great pattern, and a fun day of sewing!
Wendy

Oh my gosh, Wendy, I love that! I have Sandra’s pattern, too, and now all I want to do is sew! I have had to be with my mom in the hospital all weekend, so, of course, have not had a moment to actually sew. Really love your version!

How fun is that?!? I love that floral fabric, and those colors are so pretty together.

Gorgeous!! I bought the pattern last week. It’s been too hot here in south central WI to be in the sewing room. After seeing your version, I think I know just the fabric for this! Thanks for sharing your “squirrels”.

I love that floral fabric–combining it with the others in this is just a perfect showcase for it! An excellent use of squirrelism!

Well I didn’t actually squeal or say “oh!!” out loud today but I am still grinning from ear to ear. Thank you for making this and letting the squirrel speak to you! I absolutely love how it turned out 🙂

Two very cute squirrels! Well, three, if you count the little stuffed guy in the first picture. I do love the brights and they look great in this little quilt. Kumquat? Who names these? 🙂

A modern twist to an old pattern – really love your ‘squirrels’ HA!
Quilting is in my Blood
What a fun quilt. I really like how the HSTs in the corners of the borders looks like mitered borders. And it’s super fun to see your squirrel make another appearance. I like seeing him almost as much I like pics of Wilbur!

What a fun squirrel you wrangled into submission – and to get 2 fun things from it…totally awesome.

Ooh yummy fabrics in that star quilt. I like how the border changes color on two sides.

Wendy not only did you let Your Star Shine with the quilt, but your creative us of the trimmings to make a sweet runner. Well done! They are both simply stunning.
