Welcome to My House Blog Hop
Today is the beginning of the Welcome to My House Blog Hop hosted by Carol of Just Let Me Quilt. I am delighted to be one of the first to post for the Hop!
I want to thank Carol for hosting and organizing this Hop. Our assignment was to make a quilt with a house in it. It was a fun project!
Come on in!
If you were to come to my house, I’d welcome you at the door, encourage you to kick your shoes off, put up your feet and have a seat. I’d offer you coffee, tea, or maybe cider since we are entering our fall season here in Minnesota. Or I might take you for a drive through my historical hometown and show you where the citizens of Northfield defeated the James-Younger Gang when they tried to rob our bank. We might take a stroll on one of the two college campuses here in town, Carleton College and St. Olaf College. After all that, we might need to stop for coffee at one of our many coffee shops in town before we do a little shopping in our picturesque downtown.
My Little House Quilt
When I’m not enjoying my hometown, I often take trips with my husband. If I get to stay by water, I’m a happy girl. I recall one stroll down the beach on a warm late summer day, and how I enjoyed all of the brightly colored beach umbrellas. The colors in my little house quilt bring back memories of that beach.
I made little improv houses using my Kona solid scraps along with Kona Silver for the background. This little quilt measures 14″ x 15″. I stitched the houses together as I went, no pattern, no rules. They are all a little wonky, and I like them.
You can see that I got a little creative with my quilting as well, combining machine quilting in various colors with big stitches to add some texture. Most of the threads I used were Aurifil 40 wt, 50wt, and 12wt.
I think the big stitches frame up the little houses. I used light colored threads for the big stitches with the idea of keeping the houses as the focal point.
The Welcome to My House Blog Hop runs from today through September 14th. Here are my fellow bloggers who are posting today. Please visit their blogs and leave a comment or two!

I have never made a house quilt, but your improv houses and lovely quilting are making me want to just jump right in with some scraps to play.

Wendy, I love the beachy feel of your quilt. I adore Kona solids, too. As of yet I have not made a house quilt and it is on my list. I bought the fabric for a house quilt and hadn’t settled on the pattern for sure yet. That quilt is still on hold. I just purchased “Village” pattern and it uses 5″ squarers for the body of the house and flying geese for the roofs. I haven’t used charm squares for anything yet so I’m collecting them and, of course, I’ll be using scraps and some yardage. I just adore house quilts and yours is no exception. I love the addition of the large hand quilting stitches. I like the homeiness of the stitches that it adds for me. Thanks for participating in the hop and getting the party started with finesse.

Love this sweet quilt and trying to decide which house is my favorite. My first pick was the top center one but decided I’ll call the right bottom-I need a big house to hold my stash.

Thank you for sharing such cute houses. I will have to figure out how to make your blocks. You certainly met your goal of melding houses+beach umbrellas. I would love to visit your town. I have never been to MN. I’ve always thought of it as a very cold place…but everyone has their seasons. Great work. robinsbusiness@hotmail.com

Wendy, I love your little houses so much I can hardly stand it!!! 🤗
I’m on a Kona solid kick now (as you probably figured) and think it is too fun for so many projects, perfect for your houses.
Bernie
What a fun mini quilt. The houses are adorable and yes, they bring your mind right to the beach.
I loved your invite to your home and town. Hoping one day I will enjoy that sort of afternoon with you. What fun that would be. 🙂

These houses are just too cute! Love the solid colors and the brightly colored quilting stitches.
I don’t think I realized that you are in Northfield. I grew up in Rochester and we visited Northfield from time to time. I remember it as a beautiful place. I went to summer music camp at St. Olaf and my dad & I used to go there for student concerts throughout the year. I think he was disappointed that I didn’t go to St. Olaf for college.

Cute little houses!
