Whalynn and Willie

Today I’d like to introduce you to Whalynn and Willie, my two whale blocks for the Awesome Ocean Sew Along hosted by Kathleen McMusing. I had so much fun making these, with the help of Something Rosemade and her handy tips.

Looking at the pattern, I thought these blocks would be big – they are whales, after all. Surprisingly, these blocks are only about four inches wide and just a little over a foot long. They are really cute, and quite fun to make. I’d like to make 3-4 of these into a pillow – how cute would that be?

And here they are – Whalynn and Willie. Which one is which? You decide! Both blocks were made from fabrics in my stash of batiks.

Here are the other Awesome Ocean blocks I’ve made so far. I’m making the smaller size quilt, so just two of each block. My goal is to make all of the blocks using my batik stash; so far, so good!

Kelp
Octopus
Puffer fish
Angelfish
Clownfish

The next blocks are sea turtles, and I have my them all cut and ready to go. Emily of The Darling Dogwood will be giving tips on stitching them together, so I’ll be watching for her post. I’ll show them to you soon!

I’ll be guest posting on the Awesome Ocean Sew Along at the end of this month. I’m looking forward to showing the blocks to you. I’ll share a little about the construction of the blocks, my thoughts on the pattern, and some tips to help you if you are sewing along with us.

Are you sewing along with us on Awesome Ocean? Come on in — the water’s fine!
