Whalynn and Willie
Today I’d like to introduce you to Whalynn and Willie, my two whale blocks for the Awesome Ocean Sew Along hosted by Kathleen McMusing. I had so much fun making these, with the help of Something Rosemade and her handy tips.
Looking at the pattern, I thought these blocks would be big – they are whales, after all. Surprisingly, these blocks are only about four inches wide and just a little over a foot long. They are really cute, and quite fun to make. I’d like to make 3-4 of these into a pillow – how cute would that be?
And here they are – Whalynn and Willie. Which one is which? You decide! Both blocks were made from fabrics in my stash of batiks.
Here are the other Awesome Ocean blocks I’ve made so far. I’m making the smaller size quilt, so just two of each block. My goal is to make all of the blocks using my batik stash; so far, so good!
The next blocks are sea turtles, and I have my them all cut and ready to go. Emily of The Darling Dogwood will be giving tips on stitching them together, so I’ll be watching for her post. I’ll show them to you soon!
I’ll be guest posting on the Awesome Ocean Sew Along at the end of this month. I’m looking forward to showing the blocks to you. I’ll share a little about the construction of the blocks, my thoughts on the pattern, and some tips to help you if you are sewing along with us.
Are you sewing along with us on Awesome Ocean? Come on in — the water’s fine!

I love your fish blocks – I made a fish quilt or two ages ago and haven’t thought of them in a long time – I wonder whatever happened to them I know they don’t live in my house – I must have given them away or sold them – they were child quilts

Good morning! Awww, Whalynn and Willie are just perfect. I love those fabrics, especially the dotted/dashed one. I think there is a cuteness tie between them and the puffer fishies. How fun! I look forward to seeing the turtles. ~smile~ Roseanne

Wendy, your whales are so much fun! They would definitely be adorable for something like a pillow. You’ve been finding the perfect fabrics for all of your ocean creatures – did you purchase a certain set or bundle just for this project?

Happy Valentine’s day! Those are some pretty handsome whales. Now I can hardly wait to see the turtles.

I’m thinking Willie is the more psychedelic one, on the bottom. They are fabulous and I love the names you are picking. Talked to Rose and a week form today I’ll be meeting up with her. So wish you were there.

I think Willie is the bottom one too, love your names. My favourites so far just have to be the puffer fish, those faces are priceless.

I love your whales! I think they are my favorites so far, but I know there are more sea creatures to be revealed 🙂
Quilting is in my Blood
These whales are so colorfully wonderful! I think the bright pink one might be Willie. This is going to be such a fun quilt!

What fun and pretty blocks Wendy. I also enjoyed reading your last post. We have a large rooster print near the kitchen…love it. I have never heard of alphabities but what a helpful thing. I also inherited a large amount of pottery from the first wife who had her own kiln. Fortunately, I love it. 🙂

This really is a cute sew along you ladies are doing and I love seeing everyone’s renditions and fabric choices. I may have snort-laughed when I saw your post (title and pic) in my inbox. Clever girl!

Very cute and very fun blocks! It’s going to be a sweet quilt.

I love Whalynn and Willie! So cute! I now only have the whales to make and then I’m caught up. They do seem like small whales 🙂 Scale is off, for sure, but they sure are cute! The book Fat Quarter Baby by It’s Sew Emma has a whale block that is much bigger–I made one for my big ocean creature quilt last November and I’d like to do a quilt of just whales. Love seeing all your Awesome Ocean friends together!

These are fabulous blocks. This certainly will be an awesome quilt 🙂
