I’m having fun making scrappy Doodad blocks in my quilt room. The Doodad block is a recent design release by Victoria Findlay Wolfe and when I saw her posts on Instagram, I was hooked. I bought the kit, because I had a hunch I would enjoy making this block. I was right.

I’ve been wanting to use up the fabrics in this bin for quite some time, and they are perfect for the scrappy Doodad blocks. The scrap fabrics in this bin are smaller than a fat quarter, but too large for my little scrap bins. Most of the fabrics are offcuts from other projects and that kind of thing.
The scrappy Doodad blocks can be made in two sizes, 18″ and 12″. I started with the larger blocks. My plan was to just try one block, then get back to my medallion quilt and finish my Summer Solstice quilt top. One 18′ block, just to see how the block went together, then back to my other projects.
I had fun picking out the fabrics for the scrappy Doodad blocks. The cutting went easily with the templates in the kit. I was surprised at how quickly I was finished with the first block.

So maybe one more, since it was so quick. I got a little braver with my fabrics.

Well, that was a blast! Who knew I had such fun scraps in that bin? Maybe one more, with a little of that pickle green I love (my friend Rose and I call it “citronickle”). I really had fun with the fabrics in this one.

Well, I didn’t stop, and before I knew it, I had eight 18″ scrappy Doodad blocks! So, I decided I might as well make some 12″ blocks. I had fun messing around using two different fabrics for the arcs on one block, and fussy cutting the center on the other.

And here is my design wall full of scrappy Doodad blocks so far.

I’m having fun just messing around with the fabrics and seeing how the blocks turn out. The scrappy Doodad blocks are exactly what I need right now, quilt blocks that don’t demand a lot of concentration and are just enjoyable to stitch together.
The book that comes with the kit has a variety of design layouts for the blocks, as well as some good tips for construction. Each template set has instructions included as well. They are very forgiving blocks to make, and the arc is a very gentle curve, so it would be an easy block to try if you haven’t sewn curved blocks but want to try.
Maybe my scrappy Doodad blocks will empty out that bin! Wouldn’t that be somethin’?!
Happy sewing, all!
Wendy

Wendy those Doodad blocks are just too much fun!
Fun blocks.
Fun blocks, Wendy! I like how there are two sizes you can mix together in one quilt.
Oh wow. You have to carry on until that bin is empty because the blocks look especially stunning in a group. I can see you are having lots of fun. Keep on rolling!
Those are awesome blocks! Love that you used scraps to make them!
Those are so cute! I love the circle with the nine-patch. You sure have some cool scraps!
Those are awesome!
Wonderfully crazy, fun and practical, too – ie using scraps. Perhaps a bit therapeutic also?
What fun to see all those brights together on your wall! You nailed each and every one of those blocks.
Those look fun! Sounds like they could be the new version of a potato chip block – you can’t make just one! Great job using your scraps and getting a fun mix of blocks out of that bin, Wendy!
Seeing your posts and color combinations always puts me in a good mood. I get inspired to find m sewing machine and try new color combinations not familiar to me. Have more fun this week.
Oh, those look super fun and like potato chips – you can’t make just one! I look forward to seeing how these evolve.
Such a beautiful selection of fabric scraps. It looks like a fun block to work on. I think I prefer the 18″ blocks because they are easier to see. But all of them are beautiful.
OMG, what fun blocks these are. I love how find something, make one or two and then just keep going. They look amazing!
oh that is a neat block – I used to follow Victoria for a few years back when she blogged a lot (before fame but close) and then I couldn’t find her blog for awhile and saw her on Instagram I will need to check and see if I can find her again.
That is such a cool block!
If you’re creating something beautiful, having a great time, AND using up scraps!!!! Well, that’s just a triple crown that can’t (and shouldn’t) be stopped!
Well I was wondering if all that fun resulted in an empty bin yet? Maybe even half? Looks like a grand ol’ time in the sewing room! Rainy and cool here and I’m in my room for the whole day. Hope to have as much fun as you’ve had!
I love your blocks! I’m glad you’re having fun while playing with your scraps. I think I might have to give these blocks a try because they’re so cute! #futuregoals

I always love seeing where you go on your adventures, and this block brought another fun trip through scraps and fabric! I love her new block and in your hands with your skills at color, they all turned out wonderfully! Love them all!
That sounds so much fun – how one block led to another and, before you know it, you’ve nearly got a quilt top! Those Doodads look fantastic on your wall 🙂
Those are definitely fun blocks, Wendy! I don’t do well with curves without my AccuQuilt! LOL These look easier than most. Might be fun to try!
