Snail at Sea is my project for the Project Quilting 12.4 challenge hosted by Persimon Dreams. The prompt for this challenge is the Snail’s Trail block. I had a little fun with this one.
Right off the bat, things got a little fishy. Pretty clever using a past prompt – fussy cutting – in this challenge, eh?
And then things went a little to the birds. Those two little blocks that make up the bird are just a bit of a twist on the Snail’s Trail block.
Bring the fish and the bird to water, and we get:
Snail at Sea! The waves are made with the Snail’s Trail block, using blues and low volume whites and light cream. All of the fabrics for the quilt top are from my scrap bins – even the binding. The backing is a small cut from my stash.
All the quilting was done with my walking foot. The water droplets by the fish are stitched with Aurifil Lana wool. The finished quilt measures 12 inches x 13 inches.
Oh Wendy, this is just delightful. Ten out ten to you for bringing the rather boring snail trail block to life.

I kept seeing “Snail’s Trail” on the hashtag on IG and honestly, I’ve never heard of it, although I have seen it. And how pretty yours is! I love that little fish, and yes it was very clever incorporating the fussy cut. Isn’t it a good feeling to use all scraps and have something turn out so great?

Wendy, this is just the cutest little quilt!! I am kind of obsessed with snail’s trail blocks at the moment and will have a big reveal of mine soon!! I do, however, cheat with the BOB AccuQuilt die at times! I love the fussy cut fish and the bird in the air and the quilting!! Great job!

Oh Wendy!! This is exquisite! You are so very clever and creative from making the bird to the fish to even adding droplets! I just love everything about this piece and it’s in my favourite colour too, with a favourite subject: water, big bodies of it. Just excellent all around.

That turned out really cute. I love how you made the seagull. Very clever. Coming up with ideas for “Color Theory?” I’ve gone in so many different directions, but I think I know what I’m doing now.

This is so neat, Wendy! I love it! Especially the little fish leaping over the waves with his embroidered splash. We see flying fish all the time, and they never fail to delight 🙂
