Today is my day to show you my Union Square Quilt Block, a free block pattern from The Fat Quarter Shop. A classic, vintage block, it goes together so easily and makes a beautiful quilt.
This is the fabric I will be using for my blocks, Jo Morton’s Hickory Lane. It is beautiful fabric with its dark, earthly colors. I’m thinking this will be a lovely quilt for fall.
My Finished Block
The block pattern is free from The Fat Quarter Shop. The construction of the block is very simple and basic. It goes together quickly.

The instructions are well done, making those points match up nicely.
If classic and vintage aren’t your style, this block could easily transition to something fun in modern fabrics. It would make a bold statement in solids, could be a sweet quilt done in soft pastels for a baby quilt, or how about a patriotic theme for a 4th of July quilt, with all those bursting star blocks?
The Fat Quarter Shop offers a kit for this pattern, as well as a backing kit in bright, summery fabrics by Betsy Chutchian, so if you’d rather just kit up and sew, they can help you with that!

I’ll keep you posted on my block progress as I make the blocks for this quilt, so come back and visit, or follow my blog.
Adventure awaits . . .
For the next week or so, I’ll be away from my computer and spending some time with BigJ. I may not be posting on my blog, but you’ll hear from me on my Instagram @piecefulwendy
Enjoy your weekend, friends! Will you be quilting? I’d love to hear about it!
Wendy

What lovely rich colours. Like your block.
Thank you!
I like your choice of fabrics, will you be making this into a lap quilt then? Same block throughout?
Yes, lap size or maybe a bit larger. Same block, different fabrics.
You did a nice job on the block Wendy. It looks great in the civil war fabrics but I could imagine it in brights as well.
I think it would look great in brights 😊
Oh, that’s a really nice block! I’ll file this one away for future pondering. Have a relaxing time with BigJ. Will you be traveling?
Yes! A road trip!
I like those old fashion blocks and the fabric!
Thanks! Me too!
That is a great block! I love that pretty blue fabric! I also enjoyed seeing the individual pieces you made it from – block construction is always interesting to me. Have a wonderful getaway!
Thanks, Diann! The fabrics in this line are very pretty, so it will be fun to make!
Beautiful colors Wendy. That stack of fabric is just gorgeous. Have a great time on your trip. Enjoy!!

Pretty block. Is that snow I see outside from your window in the top photo?
Yes, but the photo was taken mid-March!
Your fabric choices look warm and inviting — I agree it would make a great fall quilt. Enjoy your time with hubby 🙂
Thanks! I’m just about packed!!
Looks wonderful and warm! You’re right – it will be perfect for fall!
Happy Quilting! 🙂
Thanks!
Hi Wendy! I love this block and especially the fabric collection you chose for it. The block kind of reminds me of a bear paw, but I can see the star shape as well. I hope you have a fun week with Big J. I’ll be watching for updates on IG. ~smile~ Roseanne
Thanks, Roseanne! It reminds me a bit of the Kansas troubles block too.
Pretty block! Luscious fabrics. Have a great week!!!
Thanks, Nancy!
This is a lovely block and I love those fabrics 🙂
Thanks, Janine!
I love the way this block looks. Have a great trip – I imagine that you are already on your trip. I returned from my extreme sewing weekend (2 hour drive) then up to Maine. Happy to be here, but so behind as I have had no computer time since Wednesday. Again, have a great time away.
Thanks! Yes, we are here. Hope the retreat was fun!
Beautiful block, neatly made – So Wendy!!!
Thanks, Preeti ☺️
