Block Making Part 2 is a bit of a surprise. I did not have these blocks in mind when I woke up Thursday morning. I had planned on starting blocks for a baby quilt that my daughter wants to give to a friend. It was a rainy day, perfect for sewing. I’d been discussing fabrics for the baby quilt with my daughter, so while I was waiting for me to get back on some of the colors, I thought I’d mess around with something else.
Elizabeth and her friend Carol have been hosting an Oh! Granny quilt along, and I’ve been admiring all the pretty Granny blocks showing up. I commented to Elizabeth that if I got distracted, I might make a couple Granny blocks. Well, I did get distracted and before I knew it, I had a little crew of happy little Granny blocks dancing on my design wall while the rain poured outside!

I mention the blocks on the left because I’m using the same method for choosing colors as I did with my X blocks in yesterday’s post. Some of the colors in the blocks on the left carry over to the blocks on the right. Can you see which colors carry over? (Blocks 3 and 4 might confuse you; Block 3 has a deep pink, but the photo shows red.) It’s a fun way to choose colors, and adds a little bit of consistency (maybe?). Anyway, I obviously had loads of fun.
I’m using the 3-block design from Elizabeth, and 2-inch blocks for the squares. My blocks square up at 7 inches. I’m going a little renegade and using a different background for each block rather than one neutral color. Given that I hadn’t really planned on jumping in on the Oh! Granny quilt along, I’ve no idea how I will finish this quilt once the blocks are made, but I have plenty of time to figure that out.

Your blocks look so pretty! I’ve been making those blocks too but have only 8 so far. I’m planning a wall quilt. I like your method of carrying color over to the next block, it makes for an eye-pleasing look. 🙂

LOL, gotta love it when a squirrel jumps on your shoulder and encourages you to play! Those are pretty blocks and I love how you used the carryover color to the block on the right. I have been thinking at some point I want to do some granny squares.

I like your new method of taking a color from a previous block and placing it in the next block. With two blog posts showing two different block patterns for different projects made up in this manner, it is proving to be a great go-to twist in keeping a bit of control in scrappy based quilts IMHO. I remember these solids in a project you did, but not the actual project. Which one was it? Was it the ‘Pickle’ one?

Oh my goodness – those color combinations in that granny square quilt block set are amazing! The purple center and two green shades one looks 3D!
