Happy Jacks and Candy Corn is a pattern by Bonnie Sullivan. It popped up in my feed one day, and I snatched it up because it was cute and I wanted something fun to stitch up for fall. I’ve made a few of her patterns in the past, the “Be” Bowl Fillers was one of my favorites, so I knew this bunch would be an enjoyable hand sewing project.
I bought the Happy Jacks and Candy Corn pattern kit, which includes the pre-cut flannel applique pieces and the buttons. It also includes chenille yarn to whipstitch around the edges, but I chose not to do that (for now). The pre-cut flannel applique pieces are so easy to use. They adhere quickly and easily to the pre-printed fabric. All that needs to be done is a quick stitch around the edges with matching thread. It’s very relaxing to do while watching a show in the evenings.
There are six pre-printed panels in the set. While I chose to stitch them up separately as bowl fillers, Bonnie also gives instructions for making the panels into a mini quilt, so there are options if you aren’t into bowl fillers.
After cutting the panels apart, I fused all the applique pieces to each panel. Because the fabric is pre-printed, only a few pieces of each design are fused applique pieces, like the jack o’lanterns. The rest of the design is printed on the fabric. Can you tell which designs are fused, and which are printed? Here’s a peek at the six, close up.
Those little black buttons are really small! The pair on the dancing jack are just shy of 1/8″ I think. Even being really careful while stitching the down, I lost one in my chair, never to be seen again. Thank goodness I had some very small buttons in my stash to finish up the last jack!
The pre-printed panels are 5″ x 7″ unfinished, so they are a bit smaller once sewn and stuffed with polyfil. For the backing fabric, I used a dark brown fat quarter from my stash. My Happy Jacks and Candy Corn bowl fillers will soon become part of my fall decor!

Those are cute, Wendy! What a fun idea to sell the kit with pre-printed panels and some fusible pieces to make construction fun and simple. I was picturing myself with those tiny buttons, though – I’d probably have to spread a plain sheet out on the floor and sew them on to the fabric there, because I’m sure I’d be dropping more than just one. Fun project and cute finishes!

These are adorable and there is something to be said for a kit that is just fun to tackle. Looks like you had a great time making them and they will be fun to look at. I will watch for these as I like having things that are all ready to make. I bet there are a few things waiting in my stash…..yikes.
