I have a little sewing progress to show you this week. I’m going to link up once again with Carol over at Quilt Schmilt for her To Do Tuesday linky party. Let’s take a look at what has been happening here at Pieceful Thoughts.
I missed posting last week, because at that point I had nothing much to show you other than a few blocks. In my last post, I had just six of the Union Square blocks sewn. This week, I actually made sewing progress and now have 16 blocks sewn.
I may make a few more blocks, but I’m currently considering layouts for these blocks. They are not in their final order in this photo, I just put them up as I completed them. Initially, I made one block for a quilt promotion on classic block designs from The Fat Quarter Shop back in 2019. Then I decided to make more blocks because the construction of the block was so simple. However, while I evidently had a plan as far as how many blocks to make, none of my 2019 notes make sense! So I’m back to making a plan. I also made them using varying background fabrics, so that’s a bit of a puzzle for the layout, too. Anyway, stay tuned. Hopefully I’ll at least get a top completed before another 6 years goes by!
As long as my bin of reproduction fabrics was strewn all across my cutting board, I decided I might as well play a little bit more. Before I knew it, these little 3.5 inch blocks were keeping company with the Union Square blocks.
This is definitely a squirrel! It was not even in my mind when I wrote my last post. They were so much fun to make. I know what I want to use for the background fabric for these blocks, but it means I’m going to need to do a little fabric acquisition, which will have to wait until later this week. So you’ll have to wait to see the final quilt top.
My list in my last post was to 1) make more Union Square blocks (done), 2) work on my challenge quilt for The Endeavourers (I have a plan in my head), and 3) clean and shelve fabric (nope, my mess has grown!). This week’s plan:
- Settle on the Union Square layout
- Finish that little project
- Let the squirrels play!
Meanwhile, Wilbs and I are both quite attached to this fabric bundle (an older Anna Marie Horner). I have a plan for this one, once I settle on a background fabric.

The colours of your union square blocks are so striking. Love the pattern too. Is it really an easy one? Looks complicated to me.

I love this… “… while I evidently had a plan… I’m back to making a plan…” I do love a good plan!!! In so many of the on-line painting classes I’ve taken lately, there’s a word that’s used (overused even)… “intuitive”. Just go with it… don’t think about it… do what comes… don’t look ahead for the next steps… don’t plan… Yeahhhhhhh….. No… I need a plan.
I like your Union Square blocks! They don’t look easy to make, but I’ll take your word for it. The small blocks are beautiful.
That picture of Wilbs is adorable. He always reminds me of my Jack (except Jack is overweight, er “fluffy”) but I bet Wilbs is nicer. Jack has a tortie attitude for some reason. Looking forward to seeing what you do with that bundle.

Let the squirrels play. . .I laughed as sometimes that happens to me. . .well, actually more than I would like to admit although my squirrel is happy when she gets to play! Wibs and the fabric bundle. . .what a precious photo!
Those Union Square blocks are really neat! So glad you went ahead and made more of them. I like quilts where the blocks have different background fabrics – I bet you’ll figure out a good layout for them. The little squirrel blocks are fun, too! Wilbs is such a good quilting cat – he knows all the pretty fabrics!
Your Union Square blocks look wonderful together, and I hope that finding a layout that brings you joy is a fun task for the week. The small bonus blocks are adorable! And good luck getting that fabric away from Wilbs. He looks so protective!! 🙂

3.5 inch blocks done so well. I’m not sure I could make those. I like your palette for the Union Square blocks. Wilbs has a nice fabric stash starting. Enjoy your week and happy sewing.
All those blocks are lovely and look really nice together. They seem difficult to make for me. Love the way your cat hugs the stack of fabric; a little naughty look in his eyes.
Those blocks are all so much fun! I love how you just start playing and now have another fun project. Of course, there is the theme of needing background, but you will find something I am sure! Love Wilbs!
That’s always where I loose my momentum is having to figure out the setting for a group of blocks. Hopefully something comes to you quickly. Enjoy playing with fabric and thread this week.
Sometimes the ‘squirrel’ moments are so so worth it! Glad you had a good sewing week, even if it wasn’t quite what you anticipated.
When I see blocks or projects in reproduction fabrics I swoon! Just give those blocks all the time they need to speak to you, eventually a layout will deveop. Also love the squirrel fun you had with your stash. Hmmm, maybe a mini sampler or a border for those Union Square blocks will develop? Whatever it is it will be lovely! And Wilbs needs to go on a Shop Hop if he’s going to hu fabric like that! Ahh, definitely a quilter’s pet for sure!!

Those teensy blocks are so cute. I recognize/have some of those fabrics. :o). Nothing wrong with a little squirrel activity, especially if a finish results. Nice progress–looks like both will soon be finishes! And Wilbs: ” ‘Dis mah favorite fat quarter pillow!”
Hi Wendy. It’s so much fun to see you and Wilbs again! Your Union Square blocks are going to be fun to see how you put them together. It will be an interesting quilt for sure.
