Autumn has come to my little corner of the world. The trees are slowly beginning to show off their fall colors. The colors of fall have been popping up in my quilt room, too. I have a pair of little Autumn pinnies to show you today.
I’ve been playing with my hand-dyed fabric from Vicki Walsh (miss your fabric, Vicki!), and the golden colors of fall were strewn over my cutting board. I wanted to use up some of the scraps, so I was thinking about what I could make. Then I remembered the book, Pin Pals by Carrie Nelson.
I like to page through this book from time to time to enjoy all the cute pinnies and for inspiration. You can see some of the other pinnies I’ve made from the book here. When I saaw the maple leaf pinnie, I had to make one, which soon became two.
My pinnies are a bit smaller than the version in the book. The maple leaf block finishes at 1-1/2 inches. With the added borders around the maple leaf, the pinnies finish at 4 inches. When I finish the top for the pinnie, I like to add some fusible fleece and then do some quick quilting. I use my regular presser foot and just lengthen the stitches a bit. The pinnie above is quilted with just some straight stitching in the borders using a dark gray thread in 40 wt.
The second pinnie is quilted the same way using a deep rust thread in 40 wt. The background fabric is a charcoal gray chambray. Once the pinnies are sewn together, I fill them with crushed walnut shells. Before I stitch the opening closed, I tuck in a bit of stuffing as a little leakage barrier in case my stitches aren’t close enough together. I don’t recall where I heard that tip, but it’s a good one.
Of course, Wilbs was on hand to help while I made the Autumn pinnies, but mostly he just wanted to sit on the fabric that matched his furs so well. And eat treats. Always eating the treats!

They are adorable. Love the styling with the squirrel, mug, and squares of orange fabric. I also appreciate the tip of putting the stuffing in where you’re closing up the hole, so the crushed walnuts don’t fall out.
So cute! I like the dark fabric around those pretty colors. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the maple leaf block finishing at 1-1/2 inches. That means those little pieces are only . . . oh my gosh they must be TINY! Now I have a headache. 😉

The pinnies are just so cute, esp in my fave colors. I just love how you staged them, with your fabric scraps being “leaves” all around. Perfect! I remember you writing about this book before. I had access to it on a previous subscription service but I recently canceled it. Might have to put it on the Christmas list. Hmm…

I like that they are the same except for the quilting thread color. And great tip to tuck in a bit of batting prior to closing the seam. Perfect makes for this time of year. 🙂
That’s a lovely little fall pin cushion! The hand dyed fabric really is pretty even when cut so small.
It’s hard to believe that fall is here!! such beautiful deep oranges and yellows in the hand dyes. They make great maple leaves. And the pincushions are wonderful. Of course, Wilbs loves to be the star of at least one photo….and he was awake for this one.
These are so cute!! So when doing this sort of miniature piecing, do you make the HST a bit bigger and then square them up? I have never even tried something so small soni am curious. The tip about batting on top of the crushed shells is genius. Love the autumnal colors. We are just starting to feel fall in the air out here and it makes me happy. Love this season!
