I have a scrappy improv finish to share today. While I was cleaning up from making my little pincushions and a few other projects, I came across a little bundle of improv scraps. Of course, you know what happened next, right? It seemed a bit silly to stash them away again, so I decided to toss them up on my design wall and see if I could make anything from them.
I don’t recall what quilt these bits came from, but after some trimming and moving them around on the design wall, this is what came together. This little quilt measures 13 inches by 17-1/2 inches. Once the top was pieced, I had a few little bits left to use, so I pieced them into the backing. Once the quilt was finished, all those scraps had been used – yay!
I kinda like the idea that the backing makes this quilt reversible. And I like the idea that now none of those scraps are stashed away for another bunch of days. I have a fun little quilt to use.
I had some fun with the quilting, too. Any chance I have to use these three neon threads is always a kick! I didn’t stress much over the quilting, stitching random straight lines throughout the quilt, switching out the thread as I went along.
While the above photo doesn’t show the three thread colors well, you can see them. Here’s a peek at the back, which shows the quilting a little better.
Al in all, it was a fun afternoon of playing with some improv scraps, and now I have a scrappy improv finish rather than bits laying in a drawer.
How am I going to use this scrappy little quilt? Well, I had an idea to clean out the shelf below my cutting table and make a little hidey hole for Wilbs. He likes to sneak in there and explore. So I did some rearranging, cleaning and organizing (my batting scraps are all organized for when I’m in the mood to do some frankenbatting now), I had his little hideaway set up. I picked him up and showed him the spot. Well, you know cats. He sniffed around, jumped out and left, before I could even get a photo. Cats!! Maybe he’ll sneak in there someday, we’ll see!

It’s always nice to use up those odds and ends. You made really good use of those, very bright and bold. The quilting is fun too. Give Wibbs a bit, if he likes your quilts like my daughter’s cat likes mine, he’ll find his way in there for some nice nap time really soon.

What a pretty little quilt! Knowing how easily you work with tiny scraps, I figured you were going to say it measured 3 inches by 4 inches – lol! Crazy Mom Quilts Amanda Jean would be proud of you using those pretty scraps.
I am familiar with Wilbs’ reaction to something you fixed up for him – I get that a lot around here. 😉 I bet he sneaks back in and revels in it when you aren’t looking.

pretty bright solid colors – which kind of solids do you get? I used to get Kona Cottons and Bella’s but I I haven’t been into solids for awhile now.

It sounds like a great size for a quilted placemat, if Wilbs doesn’t warm up to the cozy spot to hang out. Great way to use up those scraps and keep them from going back in the scrap bin!
Improve at its best… isnt it always interesting what ideas came up, if we open a long time hidden bag of scraps!? Love it!
