The Lyra quilt is a free quilt along hosted by Sandra over at mmmQuilts. She hosts a quilt along each year to honor her dad, and we all get to benefit from her generosity. Well, this post was going to be my update on my progress. Here is my fabric pull that I shared in my last post.
All of these fabrics are from my stash. It all started with the Lella Boutique print in the center, and then I pulled coordinating fabrics from there, adding in my favorite Faded Denim Grunge in the last minute. I don’t have information on the light orange and green prints, but the darker green print is from the Thatched Basics line by Robin Pickens.
From here on out, let’s just call this “If You Give Wendy a Kite Block”, shall we?
If you give Wendy a kite block, she will draw it up to foundation paper piece, and then have to test it. She will have so much fun with the test pattern that she will decide to make all the kite blocks for her Lyra quilt. Then she will see there are Square in a Square blocks – five of them – and she will make those because she doesn’t like making them and wants to get them out of the way. She will put the blocks up on the design wall to see how they look, do a little happy dance, and go to bed.
If you give Wendy a TriRecs ruler after she has had her morning coffee, she will make a test block and then enjoy making all the triangle units for her Lyra quilt. Whoops! All of her quilt blocks are done!
She will toodle on over to her sewing machine and sew all those blocks together. Then she will add a blue border and cornerstones.
If you give Wendy a Kite Block, she will get carried away and finish a whole quilt top!
All silliness aside, the Lyra quilt was just plain fun to sew. I had to do some thinking to figure out which fabric got cut how, but once that was done, I was off and sewing. The kite blocks, triangle blocks and even those square in a square blocks went together quickly. Honestly, the fabric pull was the most challenging part of the entire quilt!
I’ll definitely make another Lyra quilt at some point, but right now I’m finishing up some other projects which you’ll see in future posts. Wilbs has been helping.

It’s hard to slow down when it’s fun and you’ve got it all figured out. Your version of Lyrica turned out beautifully.
Your quilt is lovely. The colors you chose reminds me of early morning sunrises. WILBS has some interesting strips too.

Your post has been fun to read, Wendy! And I’m so impressed with how you kept going until you had the whole quilt top done. I’m in the – if you can draw up the pattern to paper piece the kite block, can you then do the same thing for the square in a square? (The answer is yes!) And then can you also make a pattern forthe tri recs block? I’m going to try that today. Love your colors and how you pieced this to have the large circle show up in the center. Fun!

Well just as I chuckled aloud when you sent me the finished entire quilt after my having only published the first piecing step, I chuckled at this entire post. The quilt is so pretty, and I bet your brain enjoyed the workout; I mean that seriously. Thank you for quilting along with—wait, make that ahead of—me this year!

Uh oh…I notice that Wilbs is working with different fabric so I am expecting a second quilt top or possibly a reversible quilt.
