What’s one more BOM, right? I had plans this year to do one Block of the Month, which is the Monthly Color Challenge hosted by Patterns by Jen. You can see my current blocks for that BOM here and here. Then I started seeing blocks from A Quilting Life’s 2026 Block of the Month, and thought it would fun to join in.
I have one drawer of fabrics that I’d like to empty. Many of the fat quarters in that drawer are from my earlier days of quilting. I’ve been trying to use those fabrics now and then, so this BOM would be a good way to continue emptying that drawer.
I chose deep greens and reds, not my usual colors these days. I am hoping the blocks will become a cozy Christmas quilt, but we’ll see. The fabrics make photographing the blocks tricky, because the colors appear muddy in the photos.
These are the blocks for January (left) and February. And I just noticed I flipped the top row upside down on February’s block! I’ve had that up on my design wall for days and never noticed, so I’ll have to do a little ripping and fixing today.
Anyway, the deeper tan background pieces come from the left over fabric of a quilt back. I’ll use it until it’s gone, then bring in another color if I need to. The lighter background is Grunge in Roasted Marshmallow. I’m almost out of that, and I’m finding it is a very popular Grunge fabric since many places are sold out. If I can’t find more, I’ll just find a substitute from my stash.
So far, I think the blocks are working, and it is both fun and a challenge to shift to the deeper colors. Most of you know that my usual gig is really bright colors. Here is a photo from a side angle, which shows the colors in the fabrics a bit better.
Well, nothing like keeping it real, right? I’ll share a photo of the blocks once again when I have the February block fixed. The blocks are simple to make, and I think I’ll enjoy sewing these up each month, so one more BOM should work out just fine with all the other projects I have going on.

I love those rich deep colors, that is going to be a beautiful quilt. I agree, this BOM was hard to resist. And at the end we’ll have a nice Christmas quilt! I did the very same thing with my strip on the February block. 😀
Very pretty blocks. Starting a new project to use up older stash is never a bad idea. One block a month is pretty doable. Hope it you make some good progress on using up the older stash.
I think I have marshmallow Grunge in my stash. I’ll take a look!
I think one more BOM just means that much more fun with a different group of quilters. Plus, what a smart way to use of fabric in the drawer you would like to empty. I think it will make a delightful Christmas quilt!
Those are pretty blocks, Wendy! I like the rich Christmas colors. Some QALs are hard to resist, especially if you have fabric you think will work for them. Although I tried to talk myself out of it, I just started a new QAL, too! It’s all fun, right?!

Uhhh, in another blog I read 12 ufos …. Ok, I open a new one. I have to train myself to work with these patterns to train my englisch and brain. And there is a box of bright fabric deep hidden behind a lot of clothes. Thank you for sharing this.
It took me a while to catch the mistake you pointed out. I bet no one would notice in the finished quilt but I understand wanting to fix it. Looks like it will be a nice holiday quilt!
Ah ha ha! I thought Hey, way to keep it real!…and then you said the same thing. Ah well! They’re very pretty. I do like the classic deep Christmas colors!
