I’m ready to show you my SAHRR Border 1 today. It has been so much fun to check out all of the center blocks! You are a very creative crew, and we are so happy you are sewing along with us!
You might remember that my center block is small this year. You can see it in last week’s post. I wanted to challenge myself to use a smaller block for my center, along with playing with border colors to see if I can add in colors outside of those in the center block.
This week we are adding our first border to our center blocks. Brenda of Songbird Designs is the host for this week, and you will link up with her this week.

Brenda has chosen the traditional hourglass block for the SAHRR Border 1. You’ll want to stop over at Brenda’s site and read through her post for her thoughts and tips on hourglass blocks. Don’t forget to visit the posts from the rest of the hosts, too – you might find some inspiration for your border!
Of course, since I’m working in improv, my hourglass blocks are not particularly traditional. I did not use a ruler to construct the hourglass blocks, other than to square them. My method was to take two square-ish pieces of fabric, cut them on the diagonal, and sew them together. Then I paired and stacked them and cut them on the diagonal once again and sewed them together. Most of the blocks in the border are 2 inches unfinished. If you look closely, you’ll see a couple that aren’t quite square, on purpose!
I did add in some colors that are not in the center block, but they are pretty subtle. I plan to break out a bit more with next week’s border. My block with the SAHRR Border 1 added is now 10-1/2 or so. I enjoyed the process of making this border and using up some scraps.

I always love blocks and seams (and even plaids) set on an angle, as it gives great energy and liveliness to a quilt. Yours is a great example of this, with the blending of trad piecing with modern. Super job, and super progress!

I like the mix of regular squares and wonky hourglass blocks. Seems it would be more difficult to make them off square than square. LOL. I remember the first time I tried to make improv triangles. They kept coming out regular. LOL
