The Bear Quilt

The bear quilt is finished, and has been handed off to my daughter. She will be gifting it to a friend for an upcoming baby shower. We worked together to choose the fabrics and used Elizabeth Hartman’s Bjorn Bear pattern.

We chose to make 9 bears rather than 12. Once I had the bear blocks sewn, we had fun arranging them until we thought it looked good. Molly chose which bear should wear the glasses, and we thought he should get center stage. I stitched the top together, then let Connie do her longarm magic.

She chose this fun modular design, and it works so well with the quilt. I forgot to note the name of the quilting design, but if you are interested, just leave me a comment and I’ll get it to you.

The 9 bears are made using solids from Kona, AGF and Bella. Here’s the list, in case you see a color you like.

  • Row 1, L to R: Kona Sunny, Bella Acid Green, Bella Hyacinth
  • Row 2, L to R: AGF Burnt Orange, Kona Breakers, AGF Cherry Lipgloss
  • Row 3, L to R: AGF Undeniably Red, Kona Alegria, Kona Leather

The backing for the quilt is a soft flannel AGF polar bear print. I used this same print for my One Teddy Two bear quilt. It is a very fun print, and so soft and snuggly. We used a low loft cotton batting.

The bear quilt was so much fun to sew. The blocks had very few pieces and went together easily. Each bear seemed to have its own personality as each block was finished. I’d say I have a favorite bear, but I really do like them all! The bear quilt is 40″ x 45″.

Happy Stitching, all!

  1. Oh Wendy it’s so, so cute! I love the polar bear backing. The glasses are just perfect, and so is the quilting. What a fun quilt!

  2. That turned out so cute! I haven’t made an E. H. quilt but I’m really thinking over the Cats in Pajamas. (would be cute to gift along w/some actual pj’s matching one of the cats’ pjs!). I agree: the quilt design looks great with it!

  3. Wendy, this is the cutest baby quilt I’ve ever seen. You did a beautiful job on it. Everything you do is unique, fun and joyful to see. Thanks for sharing your projects with us.

  4. Oh my gosh, they are going to be thrilled to receive this quilt! It’s so cute! I really enjoy making animal block quilts and especially love Elizabeth’s patterns.

  5. That is so sweet! You three worked on that quilt and made it so special. And I see you still have solids left;)

  6. Two thumbs up for the Bear Quilt…or nine thumbs up, if that’s possible? (one for each bear). Very cute and I love that you used flannel on the back — it will be well-loved.

  7. This one is just fun, Fun, FUN! You must stay good friends with Connie because she does make choices that make magic. I never cease to be amazed at the difference the quilting makes.

That is just unbearably cute. I absolutely adore the glasses. It will be treasured by the receiver and parents.

  9. The bears are adorable and the one wearing glasses is my favorite. I love the flannel backing too! This quilt will be loved, I’m sure.

Such a happy quilt. I love the colors and would have a difficult time choosing a favorite….but maybe the one with the glasses on. But then that cute brown bear at the bottom right might also be a choice; and then….. Great quilt.
