The Winter Lantern Block is the last of the four season blocks designed by Sandra Healy Designs. I tested the block for her last month, and have been waiting to show my block until she releassed the pattern.
If you are looking at my block, and wondering if your eyes are seeing it correctly, they are. Yes, the upper left and right background squares in the block are different than the rest of the background fabric. I ran out of the background fabric, and tried to find something close, and that was all I had. I’m trying to just live with it, but will admit it bugs me a bit.
Anyway, the Winter Lantern block is 24-1/2 inches square unfinished. These are such fun blocks to make, because the pieces are not so small and Sandra’s instructions are so clear and well done. For the poinsettia and the candle, I used scraps of V and Co’s ombre fabrics that I’ve had lingering in my stash. The rest of the fabrics are from my solid scraps.
While Sandra has released all four season blocks, I have yet to finish my Spring block. I hope to get that done, maybe after the holidays. Here are the three blocks I do have finished.

It’s a cute block. I hate it when that happens. Honestly though, I didn’t notice it until you pointed it out. Besides…that’s where the glowing candlelight is.
I didn’t notice the difference in backgrounds at first. Nice block!
I love this block – I just put it in my Etsy cart. I think this would make a nice center block for a quilt. I really like the subtle difference in the background, kind of like it’s in front of a window. Your colors/fabrics are so pretty!

I think the different color background squares just look like the candle is shining it’s light out into the world. 🙂 That’s a super lovely design and looks great with the other blocks in Sandra’s series!
That is really a beautiful block. I love the way the candle flame color is repeated in the poinsettia center — such a nice detail.
Those are beautiful blocks! Maybe you can add a little embroidery in those background sections to look like light shining out from the lantern. I didn’t notice the difference right away.

Looks great! If you throw a bit of that ‘new’ background into block number four, it’ll all look like you planned it all along!

truthfully I didn’t notice the different shade of white until I finished reading then I went back to look. I think it looks great
Those are going to be so cute all together! You know you were the only one worried about the barely different color piece; however, I get it. Whenever I decide something is “fine” and I’ll just “live with it,” I never look at it and feel fine and not see it. If it’s just a lesson painting, I can be fine to leave it. But, if it’s the real thing… I forever regret being “fine with it” even when no one else notices.
It’s a beautiful block and very well done. Didn’t really notice a big dif until I read it. I wonder if the quilting can disguise it? Maybe even go heavier quilting in the white space? I’m sure Connie might have some ideas!? I think it looks fine but I do understand getting bugged by something every time you see it! LOL
It looks like an intricate piecing challenge, but I take your word for it that it was easy to make. I like the ‘mismatched’ background

We are all critical with ourself too much. Snow has different white shining as well. So, I think it is perfect and some quilting will do the rest. Most important or interesting is the pattern and this wonderfull idea for the winter panel. Its a very good design of Sandra! Love it!
Matching white is so hard, but the block still looks great. In certain light, I’m sure it doesn’t look so obvious that there are two fabrics in the block. It’s a great set of blocks. Are you going to put them all together in a wall hanging or use them individually?
